+ Overview The junior high foods and fashion program is modeled off of the high school personal foods program of studies as prescribed by Alberta Education. What students will learn in grade 7 Foods & Fashion: Food and Kitchen Safety Identify basic kitchen tools Identify the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide Identify serving sizes for the four food groups Follow a recipe to prepare basic snacks and meals based off of the 4 food group

+ Grade 7 Continued Unit 1: The social and psychological aspects of clothing- Why do we wear the clothing we do? Unit 3: Sewing Fundamentals: Sewing Safety Tools of the trade A hand-sew project

+ Overview What students will learn in grade 8 Foods & Fashion: Food and Kitchen Safety Correctly measure ingredients Follow a recipe to prepare baked goods Demonstrate the muffin method Demonstrate the biscuit method

+ Grade 8 Continued Unit 1: The Elements and Principles of Design: Line, shape, color and texture- Unit 2: Textiles and their care- 1-2 weeks Unit 3: Sewing Fundamentals: 3 weeks Safety review and parts/operation of sewing machine Stitching samples on paper A sewing machine project

+ Overview What students will learn in grade 9 Foods & Fashion: Food and Kitchen Safety Prepare a meal for breakfast lunch or dinner Identify and create an appealing meal Choose an appropriate recipe for a meal Use a work plan to create a balanced meal plan based on Canada’s Food Guide

+ Grade 9 Continued Unit 1: Wardrobe Planning: Wardrobe inventory and new acquisitions Unit 3: Sewing Fundamentals Safety review and parts/operation of sewing machine A sewing machine project

+ General Rules/Expectations Be on time and come prepared and ready to learn Have a separate binder with some lined paper and a pen or pencil for every class- keeping track of all work completed is essential for completing assignments, handing in portfolio work, and studying for quizzes/tests Review all notes before a quiz/test Hand in all work on of before the due date Inform Miss Wosar if you have any food allergies Be a productive and focused team player in your kitchen groups A printout on any missed or late assignments will be sent home to parents a few weeks prior to report cards. I will contact the parents right away in regards to struggling students or students who seem to be falling behind. Food and drinks are not permitted in class unless the drink is in a sealed container. Follow all food, sewing and lab safety rules at all times

+ Homework All assignments/projects will have the majority of time to complete in class but unfinished work will be sent home and due the following class. Students who miss class are still responsible for the work missed. Assigned homework is designed to help prepare students for the next assignment, practice for an exam, or if a students need to catch up. + Routines You are expected to come to class on time everyday ready to learn with all materials. This includes: Coming in without talking Look for any instructions on the board Grab your name tag and binder, and walk to your assigned seat Wait quietly for class to begin

+ Classroom Procedures Coming in late- check in with office, enter quietly and join in the activity without disruptions Washroom Breaks- use time before, between and after classes to use the washroom Water Breaks- bring a water bottle, or follow the same procedure as with washroom breaks Leaving Early- if you are excused to leave, clean up quietly, and assume any unfinished work is due the follow class. Electronic Devices- Either they stay in your locker, or they go in the bin at the front of the classroom UNLESS we have given you permission to use the device during class time. End of class cleanup- you will get a warning to clean up your space and wait quietly in your seat for the bell Respecting Classroom Property- respect classroom and other students’ property at all times

+ Food Lab Rules Always wear an apron when cooking Wash hands immediate upon entering the lab and any other time you touch your face, the garbage can, etc. when preparing food items Tie back long hair Wear appropriate clothing in the lab- no bulky sleeves Do not take ingredient containers into your kitchen- measure them at the demo table in small bowls

+ Food Lab Rules Use a new tasting spoon each time- no double dipping Ensure all equipment is clean and dry before and after use, and ensure everything is put back in the correct place Clean as you go- don’t leave a big mess at the end to clean Put all dirty laundry away Do not go into the fridge or pantry without permission Quickly and thoroughly clean your kitchen before the end of every class

+ Fashion Rules Follow all Sewing Safety Rules and Guidelines Complete your work carefully and completely- this includes both paperwork and hands-on projects!

+ Last Word Foods and Fashion is a class where students get to learn many hands-on skills that are practical and useful in the real world. Come into class with an open mind, don’t be afraid to try new foods or new sewing skills and most of all, HAVE FUN!
