Lesson 1: Comparing and Ordering Integers

Number Line  Points to the right of the zero (the origin) represent positive numbers. Points to the left of zero represent negative numbers. Zero is neither positive nor negative.

Integers*  The set of counting numbers, their opposites, and zero; the members of the set (…,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2,…)

Integers  All whole numbers (0, 1, 2…) are integers, but not all integers are whole numbers.

 Give an example of an integer that is not a whole number.

 Counting numbers, whole numbers, and integers are examples of different sets of numbers. A set is a collection of items.

How are the sets of whole numbers and integers different? Set of integers (…,-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,…) Set of whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3,…)

Absolute Value*  The distance from the graph of a number to the origin on a number line.

Absolute Value  Absolute value is always a positive number because it represents a distance.  The absolute value of -5 is what?

 Arrange these integers in order from least to greatest. -3, 3, 0, 1

Compare Which is greater? -3 or -1

Compare Now which is greater? The absolute value of -3 or the absolute value of -1?

Graphing points on a number line How would we graph the points -4, -2, 0, 2, and 4 on a number line?

What kind of set are these numbers a part of? (…-4, -2, 0, 2, 4,…)

Graph two numbers that are four units from zero.

Arrange these integers in order from least to greatest -4, 3, 2, -1, 0

Which number is an even number but not a whole number? -4, 3, 2, -1, 0

Compare Which is greater? -2 or -4?

Simplify I -3 I I 3 I

Write 2 numbers that are 10 units from 0.

What is an example of a whole number that is not a counting number?
