CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Detailed instructions for writing the Introduction chapter

Parts of the Introduction Define the context and set the scene for the reader Create a statement of the problem Define the purpose of the research Define the significance of the study Present any research questions and/or hypotheses

Context and setting the scene for the reader This part is only a few paragraphs at the very start of the introduction. Define the following: – Set the stage for the reader. What phenomenon is being investigated? – Put your topic in perspective. Where does this study fit in with other studies? – Make your story interesting. – Use words economically and precisely.

Statement of the Problem The format of the statement of the problem is: One sentence only followed by a few paragraphs of “elaboration” where you describe the problem in a detail. The more you write here the LESS CLEAR the statement of the problem will be to the reader! Write a simple statement with a simple explanation.

Example Statement of the Problem “Students are finding that the frequency of assignments is creating fear, anxiety, and a loss of productive learning time as they struggle to meet deadlines." This is the problem I want to investigate

Elaborate the problem Why is the problem of concern, and why is the problem worthwhile to study? Try to provide concrete example(s) of the problem that will help the reader to understand the nature of the problem in context. Do not use up too many words on this part as if the reader is interested they will be able to go to the references you have cited to find out more for themselves.

Purpose A single statement or paragraph that explains: What the researcher hopes to accomplish or achieve by completing the study? Here are some examples of parts of purpose statements: 1.to overcome the difficulty with... 2.to discover what... 3.understand the causes or effects of... 4.to refine our current understanding of... 5.to provide a new interpretation of... 6.to understand what makes ___ successful or unsuccessful

Significance of the Study Explain why your study important? – Describe to whom is it important? – What benefit(s) will occur if your study is done? – Justify the reason for your study. Make it clear your study is worthwhile completing. – Points out how your study adds new (actionable) knowledge about a topic or issue. – You need to persuade the reader about your research study.

Research Questions and Hypotheses Single questions and statements Research question 1: Null Hypothesis 1 is H 0 : Alternate hypothesis 1 is H 1 : You may not have any hypothesis testing to do if you are not comparing data from two sources.

Example RQ, H o and H 1 Research Question (RQ) Is there a difference between the speed of service of BK and KFC? Null hypothesis (H o ) H o : There is no customer service speed difference between BK and KFC Alternate hypothesis (H 1 ) H 1 : There is a difference in customer service speed between BK and KFC

END OF CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION The first chapter
