World War I World War 1 began on July 28, 1914 and lasted until November 11, The two main sides were the Allies, which included France, Great Britain and Russia; Germany and Austria-Hungary were the enemy. In total, 30 countries were involved in the conflict. Italy, once part of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary, fought on the side of the Allies.

On 31 August a month after World War One broke out - the plateau outside St George's Hall Liverpool, was "packed with thousands of men", from accountants to gas fitters, volunteering to fight.

KING’S REGIMENT (LIVERPOOL)
THE King’s regiment (LIVERPOOL) is one of the oldest line infantry regiments of the British Army In the first world war, the regiment contributed dozens of batallions to the Western front and the North West Frontier The kings later fought in the Korean War, earning the regiment’s last battle honour Nine Victoria Crosses for outstanding bravery were awarded to men of the King’s regiment, the last being given out in 1918

Remembrance Day At the end of the great war it was decided that the Allies would remember the fallen every year The date on which the war ended was chosen to be the one the people would use So the 11th November became known as Remembrance Day Every year our Queen leads the rest of the Royals in tribute to our fallen Liverpool’s Lord Mayor and council leaders also lay wreaths of poppies, at the monument outside St George’s Hall

The poppy was chosen to represent the war, red is the blood shed, black is the mourning of the people, green represents recovery & hope after the war
