Campaign for Nuclear Energy Team: Nuclear Cowboyz (NuBoyz) Michael Hartley Ben Ponto Hieu Lai Luke French
2
Overview Address concerns Propose solution Introduce team Outline project scope Explain campaign topics and methods
3
Energy Concerns Global increase in energy demand The United States is highly dependent on fossil fuels General lack of understanding and fear of nuclear power Need for high-production, sustainable and viable energy sources Environmental problems with other energy sources
6
Proposed Solution Initiate educational and promotional campaign for nuclear power Work to inform United States public of the benefits and advantages of nuclear power Generate a plan to install nuclear reactors in major cities/counties throughout the country
7
Team Background Highly qualified engineers who have backgrounds in working with nuclear power Michael: Mechanical Engineer, worked at Naval Reactors from 2000-2008 Hieu: Mechanical Engineer, completed research in sustainable energy at MIT from 2004-2010 Ben: Chemical Engineer, assisted Japanese government in containment and cleanup efforts after tsunami damage in March 2011 Luke: Mechanical Engineer, worked with One Vision Partners to develop educational programs on sustainable energy from 2005-2009
8
Scope of Proposed Campaign Phase I: Research and team building Phase II: Campaign development Phase III: Initiation of campaign in target medias Phase IV: Launch of revised national campaign
9
Ultimate Goal Improve public awareness of the importance of nuclear power as a viable, safe, and sustainable energy source Construction of nuclear reactors throughout country with public and governmental support
10
Historical Analysis Examine lessons learned from mistakes and crises related to nuclear power Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Fukushima Analyze success of United States Navy’s nuclear power program Research origins of nuclear power as commercialized energy source
11
Technical Analysis Develop basic schematics that can be shown to general public Conduct fundamental energy and thermodynamic analysis on current reactor designs Present findings in format suitable to target audience
12
Economical Analysis Analysis of costs surrounding installation and operation of reactors Explain economical advantages of nuclear power as compared to other energy sources Research cost-saving methods and develop installation budget
13
Sustainability Analysis Examine safety of nuclear power Analyze impacts on environment Discuss waste management Research methods to improve sustainability and operational safety
14
Methods of Communication Social media Classroom seminars Town hall, grass root movements Television advertisements Congressional hearings
15
Proposal Summary Problem: The U.S. needs more viable, sustainable energy sources Solution: Install nuclear power plants throughout the country Initiate national campaign to raise awareness and support
