School Census Autumn 2014 Actions Needed Reduce bugs Reduce call volumes

School Census Autumn 2014 Bugs Schools with conflicting DOA in previous school history – no longer possible Schools using AO QAN and Discount Codes that don’t exist in the DfE QWS list or in the DfE mapping list PRUs with leavers in 2013/14 that were taught at Year 12 and above when they left Special deemed PRU confused with Special when taking account of attendance information – which leavers to include and what attendance to include

School Census Autumn 2014 Bugs - Test on a greater variety of data sets

School Census Autumn 2014 Call volumes DfE no longer holds ICES and sub ICES meetings with LAs DfE help line uses a call back within two weeks policy DfE website provided incorrect information on School Dinner Taken DfE specified that planned qualification and non qualification hours were just that, but amongst the jumble of EFA documents it excluded hours for re-takes unless they were retakes because of failure to achieve grade C or above in Maths/English DfE have proved to be unreliable regarding how they will use the Census for funding, so I decided not give guidance on this

School Census Autumn 2014 Call volumes – Provide help with DfE guidance Hyperlinks to key documents Where DfE guidance conflicts with itself or with the specification, work harder on getting the DfE to improve its guidance I’m reluctant to go much further than this as I might do more harm than good in providing SIMS guidance on DfE guidance

School Workforce Census 2014 Return to Contents Return to Contents

School Workforce Census 2014 Main points to remember 1.SWC Post of Classroom Teacher (TCH) in Service Team should be reallocated to one the two new codes for such Posts (although this doesn’t trigger an error in the latest version of the DFE validation) a.Classroom teacher, upper pay range (TCU) b.Classroom teacher, main pay range (TCM)

School Workforce Census 2014 Main points to remember 2.‘NVQ4 - Any other qualification at NVQ level 4 or equivalent Qualification’ has been changed to ‘NQF4 - Any other qualification at NQF level 4 or equivalent’ 3.‘Advanced Skills Teacher’ and ‘Excellent Teacher’ pay range superseded by ‘Leading Practitioner’ 4.Base Pay included even in the rare cases where Scale and Spine Point are also included

School Workforce Census 2014 Main points to remember 5.Scale and Spine Point required for Senior Leadership 6.Basic Pay can be adjusted if Allowing Editing of Basic Pay is ticked in Tools | Statutory Returns Tools | School Workforce Census Settings

Pupil Premium Import/Maintain 2014 Points to note 1.I’m sorry that schools had to rename the DfE file before importing, but the DfE colleague who agreed the name was moved to another area Do you think we should stop checking the filename and just check the structure? 2.Early Years Pupil Premium is likely to be added at some point in the future with some impact on the School Census

School Census Spring 2015 (Autumn Release 2014) Return to Contents Return to Contents

School Census Spring 2015 Alternative Curriculum 1.School can choose whether or not to include Alternative Curriculum 2.If they choose to include Alternative Curriculum, membership of Alternative Curriculum will be included and the “exception out” for normal classes will reduce the pupil numbers for those normal classes 3.If they choose to exclude Alternative Curriculum, the “exception out” for normal classes will be ignored

School Census Summer 2015 (Spring Release 2015) Return to Contents Return to Contents

School Census Summer 2015 Main changes 1.This is the last of the Censuses in the DfE cycle for 2014/15 2.The changes are limited to those already made for the Autumn and Spring Censuses NB: Collects the least pupil characteristics and is therefore most prone to DfE Validation Error 9999 (module is missing) - normally indicates missing First Language

School Census Autumn 2015 (Summer Release 2015) Return to Contents Return to Contents

School Census Autumn 2015 Reason for Withdrawal (Post 16) 1.Functionality to be in place for September 2015 2.The DfE have suggested collected this for 2015/16, but this is silly as there would be almost nothing to collect in School Census Autumn 2015 3.Will mean changes to a.Course Manager b.Leavers Routine c.Curriculum Assignment by Student

School Census Autumn 2015 Learning Aim Providers (Post 16) 1.Provider to be collected for all Learning Aims 2.Use of UKPRN (UK Provider Reference Number) to identify provider 3.We can default UKPRN to the school’s UKPRN (must be entered in School Details) 4.Will probably mean a.New table to hold UKPRNs b.Method to update UKPRN table

School Census Autumn 2015 Previous Attainment for Maths and English (Post 16) 1.Include GCSE Result for Maths and for English 2.Not just A+ to C, as “lower” grades are also significant for funding rules 3.Include “reason for exemption from general rule regarding Maths” 4.Include “reason for exemption from general rule regarding English”

School Census Autumn 2015 Previous Attainment for Maths and English (Post 16) 5.On the surface this doesn’t seem to be a problem for us, but:- a.Exam subject is not always easy to identify, iGCSEs with no QCA code b.Increasingly pupils change schools for Post 16 and CTF doesn’t include Exam Results

School Census Autumn 2015 Child Care 1.Lots of new items for childcare 2.Should be easy to provide as long as we don’t have to pick the information up from other parts of SIMS, e.g. Alternative Curriculum

School Workforce Census 2015 (Summer Release 2015) Return to Contents Return to Contents

School Workforce Census 2015 Main changes expected 1.Removal of Scale and Spine Point for Senior Leadership 2.Addition of indicator that Senior Leadership has moved to the new pay and conditions - which is not necessary the same as moving to pay range
