Language Arts Monday, September 10, 2012 Target Learning: I can revise sentence and sentence fragments. WOC 1.1 Word of the Day (Parts of Speech): Verb – words that function as a main element of the sentence to express action, state, or relation between two things. Writing Prompt: September 10 th is “Swap Ideas Day.” Today or during the week, swap ideas with someone. This could be a friend, sibling, parent, teacher, neighbor, or anyone. Social Studies, p. 2 Monday, September 10, 2012 Group work: Create a poster that advertises the many reasons to study history. Use the following categories to group your ideas: To Know Yourself To Know Others To Know Your World Posters should be attractive, with bright colors, pictures, and words. Remember you are selling history to your peers. Homework: Finish the chapter 1 review, make notes about what to put on your group poster, and review chapter 1 for the test.

Study Skills Monday, September 10, 2012 Target Learning: I can explain how to manage my time by prioritizing homework assignments, recording after-school activities, and keeping a monthly/yearly calendar. Autobiography chapters 6, 7, and 8 due today! Time Management, p. 29: Read & Discuss then answer the following in your own words: Why should I keep a yearly/monthly calendar? Why should I write down nightly homework assignments? How does recording after-school activities impact my homework completion? How does using task analysis help with long-term projects? Create a Backwards Mapping plan for completing your Autobiography project—use the tips at the bottom of page 29. Need to finish backwards mapping and recycle project.

Complete subject: all the words need to tell whom or what the sentence is about. Simple subject: part of the complete subject. Exercise 4: Underline the complete subject in each of the 10 sentences with one line. Underline the simple subject with another line—(two lines under the simple subject). Homework: Complete Exercises 3 and 4, pp. 7-8.

Falling dominoes Engaged Listening— What does it look like in a classroom? What does it feel like in a classroom? What does it sound like in a classroom? Really Following Directions, p. 32: Engaged Listening Activity, TE 5-10. Practice following directions as a team. No talking unless activity card directs talking. First part of card tells what to listen for and the second part tells what to do or say. Listen carefully and watch what is being done in the classroom. Long pauses or completion of tasks in wrong order require a restart. Activity is repeated until all 24 steps are completed without mistakes.

Study Skills Friday, September 13, 2012 Target Learning: I can improve my understanding of how perspective (how I see things) influences what I learn. Listen and follow along as teacher reads: Three Blind Men and an Elephant, p. 37. Why were the men’s perspectives so different? Why were their impressions incorrect? How does focusing on one aspect of the elephant affect the overall picture? How can focusing on only one element when reading affect your overall comprehension? Read the story The Bracelet, p. 70 in literature text. Read the story as if you were a historian trying to gather clues. Write the main events of the story in order. Summarize the findings important to a historian. How would these findings be different for the main character of the story?
