2 Veterinarians are people who diagnose and treat animal illnesses or injuries. They take tests, preform surgeries and subscribe medicine to animals. Veterinarians work in animal hospitals or vet clinics. They usually work directly with patents and their animals but have to do some office work. Veterinarian Overview

3 History The first Veterinary School was founded in 1761 in Lyon, France and this is when the Veterinary profession first began. The Veterinary medicine in Britain didn‘t start until 1795 when the London Veterinary collage was opened. Originally veterinarians were for horses and this continued for a long time because they were needed for the army. It then moved to cows and other live stalk and today is for dogs, cats and other exotic pets.

4 Being a veterinarian is a full time job, they usually work Monday to Saturday working 50-60 hours per week. They Work as part of a team with 2 or 3 other veterinarians, a veterinary assistant and a secretary for the vet clinic Work hours per day are normally around 9-5 but in many cases they have to stay late. Many veterinarians also are on call for emergency situations every day. Being a vet is not a union job. Benefits include a pension plan built in and medical, dental and vision coverage. Veterinarians get 2-4 weeks of paid vacation and a paid sick leave. Working Conditions

5 Future Outlook The starting salary for veterinarians in Canada is $60,000 to $80,000 per year and can increase with sonority depending on the position. Right now across Canada there is a very high demand for veterinarians. 97% of people who graduated veterinary school in 2014 got jobs as veterinarians. Most of the job openings for veterinarians in Canada are in the rural areas or with the government. The job openings for veterinarians are mostly due to increase in demand for vets and veterinarians.
