Human Needs

Which needs are most important? #5 #4 #3 #2 Most Important

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

What needs does our topic cover? The need to maintain health The need to be free from anxiety The need to be secure in the environment The need for order and routine

How does Universal Health Care Help? By providing adequate health care and preventative health care to everybody regardless of their economic status By relieving stress about paying for health care costs

If Universal Health Care is so great why don’t we all have it?

Negatives to Universal Health Care Expensive (We pay taxes and pay for other peoples’ health care instead of our own) Health care organized by the government-efficient? Competition and profit motivates doctors to be the best they can be Less patient flexibility Patients won’t curb their doctor visits so the total costs will be higher than they are now

Negatives to Universal Health Care Hospitals will be overcrowded and wait time will increase for health care Health care and drugs may have to be rationed by the government-less freedom People might choose not to become doctors because of the loss of benefits

Current Systems of Health Care

France #1 Health Care System in the World Universal coverage by the government Money is contributed by citizens based on income Patients may choose their doctor Most patients can get an appointment in the same day Patients often have insurance for the remaining 30% costs that aren’t covered Preventative care is important for the system and allows high cost health conditions to be fully covered when they do occur

Germany All citizens must have health insurance which they select and buy themselves Pre-existing conditions may not be denied coverage Working germans pay 8% of their salary to a sickness fund and employers pay another 8% as well There are preventative programs in place such as phone calls from nurses and increased education from doctors which helps lower costs German doctors do not feel adequately paid

Britain Socialized medicine Health care is rationed The government runs the system completely since it pays for it. This includes choosing doctors and paying them as well as running the hospitals Taxes go to the National Health Service which then pays the doctors and hostpitals Prescription drugs are not paid for Any treatment more expensive than 45,000 a year won’t be paid for regardless of the age of the patient

Canada Universal health care Funded by income tax and sales tax National government pays for military and native people but provincial and local governments pay for everyone else Doctors and hospitals are private and bill the government Coverage does not include prescription drugs There are long waiting times, particularily for elective surgeries like knee replacements Private medical systems are illegal but occasionally exist because doctors desire more up-to-date technology

Switzerland Universal Health Coverage since 1994 Health coverage is not through the government, but through private insurance companies Even if you are unemployed you will receive health care because the government will subsidize the plan Health care cannot be for profit unless it is dental care or alternative medicine Switzerland has the 2nd highest health care costs in the world

Taiwan Taiwanese government pays for every citizens’ insurance coverage The system includes a smart card which contains all of the patients medical history cutting down on paperwork, allowing the government to be billed for health care services and allowing patients to be seen by any doctor Workers and employers are responsible for paying for the system and subsidies provide help for everyone else Patients can choose their own doctor and can see specialists and alternative medicine specialists The problem is that not enough money is being made to upkeep the system and politicians are scared to increase taxes

Cuba All citizens and visitors receive free health care Preventative care is an important part of the system including education about how to eat and exercise right Any citizen may receive a surprise home visit from a general doctor The morality and standards of the system are not as high Low infant morality rate due to high abortion rate of sick fetuses Show video- http://documentarystorm.com/sicko/ (1:48.35-1:52:20)

Brazil Private and public health care options Public option is funded by income taxes, property taxes and banking transaction taxes Anyone who can afford private system uses it due to corruption of the public system which is fighting off bankruptcy This creates a class system within the attempted universal system

Russia Attempted to create a public/private combination 90% of patiens have health insuance through the government but there is not enough funding because although the WHO reccommends a minimum of 5% of a countries total income be spent on health care, Russia only pays 3%. Patients are often blackmailed for “donations” in order to receive care
