Before election of 1860 (Lincoln became the 16 th president) Unionists – wanted to stay a part of the union. Secessionist Also known as radicals or fire-eaters Breaking apart from the Union was the only answer for SC It was not debatable Ready to secede as early as 1852 (civil war started in 1861)
