2 Oprah Winfrey went from rags to riches.
Oprah Winfey rose from poverty, abuse, and prejudice to become one of the most influential people on the planet. Her annual salary is $300 million per year.

She is the first African-American woman CEO to head a Fortune 500 company. She grew in the poor areas of NYC and is now the head CEO of the Xerox company.

6 Figure It Out (pg. 107-109 exercises 4)
How did the Buck family get rich? What did they use to do before they got rich? Why didn’t Mary Buck use to go to the movies? Imagine you win the lottery. How will your life be different? What will you do? Name five things? There is a saying, “Love of money is the root of all evil.” Do you agree? Why or why not?

9 How to talk about past habits that have changed

11 Rags to Riches Presentation
Students will get one of 5 stories from the article. You will summarize it for us: The main idea One or two examples of changes with ‘used to’ Conclusion You can start doing your research inside class today, but you can do more research outside of class. You will prepare a short presentation (3-5 minutes) at the end of tomorrow’s class.

12 Practice with ‘Used To’
In an index card, students will write, “When I was a child, I used to…” I will put it in a pile. Everyone will draw one and we will try to guess who it applies to. Discuss- Students can ask each other questions. Similarities? Differences? Life now?

13 20 Questions Speaking Game
Teacher will stick an index card to each student’s back. These index cards will have names of celebrities who went from rags to riches. The student will ask a maximum of 20 questions to their peers to find out who he or she might be!

14 Listening for Unstressed ‘To’
Review information on page. 113 in your textbooks. Understand what ought/have/etc. means Teacher will read the script in exercise 5. Cross out/link if there is a lack of stress. In your workbooks, try practicing exercise 7 with a partner. You will hear this more than you produce, but I’d like to hear this in your presentations!

15 Homework: Research and prepare for your Rags to Riches Presentation (at least 5 sentences): Summarize the main idea Add one or two examples of changes with ‘used to’ Conclusion Exercise 3 on page 110.
