SERVICES cont. Services are by appointment. Call ahead Most people can be accommodated on the same day they call, especially if they call early in the day Walk-ins can be evaluated by a Registered Nurse who decides if they can wait for the next available appointment or need services sooner We see students even if they have an insurance we don’t bill or did not bring their insurance cards with them.

Students can attach a copy of their high school immunization record to the form Students who do not provide their immunizations can be required to move out of housing and can be banned from classes.

MENINGITIS Freshmen living in residence halls are at higher risk. Signs of meningitis include headache, fever, stiff neck, rash, change in alertness. People with these symptoms must be evaluated quickly by a healthcare professional. There is an effective vaccine for meningitis, but it does not offer complete protection Resident students must either receive the vaccine or sign a waiver declining it All students should consider receiving the vaccine MAXIM will be running an on campus flu ($30) and meningitis ($130) clinic October 14, 2014. Many insurances are accepted

HEALTH INSURANCE All students taking ¾ to full time credits must either sign up for school health insurance or show proof they have comparable insurance Students must fill out an on line waiver stating whether or not they want the insurance. Students may sign up for a separate dental or vision insurance by going to www.universityhealthplans.com. Students do not have to take the school insurance to take the dental or vision www.universityhealthplans.com School insurance is a Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO.

INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS A student’s insurance must provide certain services in order to be waived. These are listed on the on-line waiver site, and on Health Services’ home page. The insurance requirements can be confusing for students and they should be encouraged to discuss any questions with our insurance clerk Chris Medeiros.

Contagious/Communicable Diseases Student Health Services is committed to protecting the health and safety of the entire campus. Students diagnosed with MRSA, and scabies are allowed to continue to live in the residential halls while their illnesses are being treated. Health Services, with the patient’s permission, does notify facilities and housing when students are diagnosed with the above so that proper cleaning of the common areas can be done.

Infectious/Contagious Diseases MRSA MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus) is a bacterial infection resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. Cultures of the wounds help to determine the best choice of antibiotic. If a student living in the residential halls has MRSA, the student signs a release of information and facilities is called to clean the bathroom. Housing is also notified. Students are taught how to avoid transmission of MRSA and can continue living in the residence halls.

Infectious/Contagious Diseases Scabies Scabies is treated with a cream applied to the skin or a pill taken by mouth. Resident students sign a release and facilities and housing is notified. Facilities cleans the common areas. Students are instructed to wash their bedding, clothing and towels.

Encourage Students to use Student Health Services Let students know they don’t have to pay to be seen. Tell them our hours, recommend they make an appointment, but let them know if they do walk-in, an RN can do a quick assessment and decide if they need emergency treatment or can wait until a regular appointment is available. Let them know we treat acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, do STD screening, do gynecological examinations, prescribe contraception, provide immunizations and can coordinate their care with their primary healthcare providers.
