THE PROBLEM Lewis is smart, but procrastinates Computer Science major, but received bad grades Rethinking what he wants to major in Financial aid for only three more years Needs to balance classes with work schedule
4
NEEDS, WANTS & CHALLENGES
5
NEEDS A visual timeline that tracks a semester-based course selection process, its trajectory, and duration of completion of related degree More detailed information on the requirements of other majors that have an affinity to his current one Information on degrees, curated to reflect other desirable options, based on his skill set + prior courses
6
WANT S A better way to search for classes/class content An array of options for using his prior courses as an investment in a new major Information on the kinds of jobs available for types of majors Information on how his skills can be applied beyond college, in the professional world knowledge on what kinds of work environments (e.g., technology, outdoors, urban) that careers typically involve Recent data on the kinds of jobs that are in demand, and what the paths are to get those jobs
7
CONCEPTUAL CHALLENGES Minimize any wasting of his prior investment of time and money in his education Adhere to monetary constraints (five year limitation to achieve his degree)
8
INTERFACE CHALLENGES An interface that utilizes engaging presentation of content with different options at several different levels, to provide an overview of possibilities for the current semester, a degree audit based on major, and a trajectory of majors towards career options A means to present multiple options that can be updated upon changing factor information — courses, majors, time duration in achieving, individual time constraints (work) A means to present substantial data that is not confusing

HOW MIGHT WE… design an elegant, robust interface that empowers Lewis with a menu of options through which he can re-direct his career, for the immediate semester, and for the long run? Such a tool will be able to reveal options and trajectories to achieve a major that: 1. best utilizes his prior educational investment and enables graduation in three years; 2. taps into his skill set and affinities 3. leverages his passions, lifestyle, and interests to design a map and pathway to an exciting future.
