1 Digital library of Spanish old newspapers and magazines National Library of Spain

2 Introduction The Newspapers Digital Library is the begining of the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, which aims to disseminate through the Internet the Spanish Bibliographic Heritage preserved at the National Library In this first stage, public access to the Digital Library of Spanish Old Newspapers is offered, with 143 titles, edited between 1772 and 1933, which means to be able to access 500.000 digitised pages.

3 Goals 1. To offer public access to the Spanish National Library old newspapers collection 2. To become a reference to research and consultation of the Spanish press 3. To open cooperation channels with other centers to complete and find collections

4 Technical Characteristics  Following the recommendations of UNESCO’s World Memory Programm :  Minimum resolution of 300 p.p.p.  According to the characteristics of publications: RGB colour, grey scales 256 levels or white and black  The files format is TIFF Compression CCITT Group IV to white and black and TIFF Compression JPEG to grey scales or colour.  OCR reading of each digitised page.  PDF files with hidden text and JBIG2 compression to disseminate images on the web  All PDF files will have miniatures

74 Next future To increase as much as possible the number of digitized titles and digitized pages:  Between 2007-2008 we are going to invest more than 500.000 € to get more than 3 million of new digitized pages To integrate this collection – at least at title level – in the OAI Server of Hispanic Digital Library
