Types of Bonds
2
There are two main types of bonds that atoms can form Covalent Bonds Ionic Bonds
3
Covalent Bonds Occur between a non-metal and another non-metal H2O – Hydrogen and Oxygen Occurs when atoms share electrons with one another
4
Ionic Bonds Occur between a metal and a non- metal NaCl – Sodium and Chlorine Occurs when an atom gives an electron to another atom
5
Ionic Bonds cont. Bonding is based on the electron charges of an atom This can be found on the periodic table of elements
7
Ionic Bonding cont. Sodium has a charge of +1 Chlorine has a charge of -1 To be happy, an atom should be neutral (0 charge) Sodium has an extra electron charge, chlorine needs one Becomes NaCl (Table salt)
9
Ions We call atoms that have a positive or negative charges ions Cation: ion with a positive charge (+) Anion: ion with a negative charge (- )
