1 New Primary National Curriculum

2 Timetable The new Primary National Curriculum is statutory for children going into Year 1, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 from September 2014 Children going into Year 2 and Year 6 will be under the old curriculum for next year since they are close to the end of their respective Key Stages

3 Overview of changes It’s more demanding
Levels will go, schools will be able to develop their own ways of monitoring progress SATs will stay, but there will be no Level 6 papers at KS2 and no calculators in maths

4 Changes for maths What’s hot? What’s not?
Formal written methods (earlier) (see appendix) Times tables up to 12 x 12 (Year 4) Fractions (earlier & more of) Roman numerals (Years 4 & 5) Algebra (Year 6) What’s not? Informal written methods Calculators (largely) Probability Data Handling (now called Statistics) (less of, and none in Year 1)

5 Changes for English What’s hot? Phonics Comprehension
Reading for pleasure Learning poetry by heart Drama Stages in writing process SPAG (see appendices 1 & 2) What’s not? Reading strategies that aren’t based on phonics eg building a sight vocabulary of high frequency words Speaking & Listening is now called Spoken Language Using ICT eg word processing work/ inserting images

6 Support for KUWTC tutors
Family Learning KUWTC wiki pages DP for your area (who’s probably teaching it too) Subject Leaders in the school Organisations like NCETM, National Literacy Trust and Times Educational Supplement (need a log in for their resources)
