1 How might you explain the changes in blood glucose in the graph?
#38 Warm UP How might you explain the changes in blood glucose in the graph? SWBAT explain how diseases disrupt homeostasis by watching videos and answering questions Standards: 5.2h Disease may also be caused by inheritance, toxic substances, poor nutrition, organ malfunction, and some personal behavior. Some effects show up right away; others may not show up for many years. 5.3a dynamic equilibrium results from detection of and response to stimuli. Organisms detect and respond to change in a variety of ways both at the cellular level and at the organismal level. 5.3b Feedback mechanisms have evolved that maintain homeostasis. 5 MIN Take out your workbook

2 What does normal blood-glucose look like?
Dynamic equilibrium describes the small corrections that normally keep the internal environment within the limits needed for survival (this applies to temperature also meals } dynamic equilibrium

3 What is a disease? Disease: any change, other than injury, that disrupts the normal functions of the body Causes of disease: Inherited from parents Materials in environment Personal behavior/nutrition Pathogens (bacteria, fungus, viruses)

4 Disruptions of Homeostasis
Watch the video and try to answer these questions: DIABETES What are the types of diabetes? What causes diabetes? How does diabetes affect homeostasis? OBESITY What are the causes of obesity? How does obesity affect homeostasis? CANCER What is cancer? What are the causes of cancer? Why do you think people die from it?

5 Activity – Disease Info
Your table will be assigned an illness or disease. Use pages 510 – 515 to get information about your assignment. Fill in the chart with your information. Share your information with the class and fill in the rest of the table as the other groups share. 25 Minutes Extension: Work on your Lab. Log on to Study Island to try the Body Systems assignment

6 Summary Let’s review the answers to the Reading Comprehension

7 REGENTS PRACTICE Reflection How can diseases disrupt homeostasis?
HOMEWORK DUE 12/16 Workbook pgs , all questions Study Island – Body Systems and Homeostasis assignment 5 minutes Give students a few minutes to think about the question. Remind them that there is no right answer and encourage them to explain it in their own words. Check task sheet while they are writing. Call on 2-3 students to volunteer answers.
