Why paraphrase before I read? OK-- you are seasoned readers: Elie Wiesel, Charles Dickens, # 4 CATS reading in Kentucky. Paraphrasing is a reading strategy that will prepare us not only for Nathaniel Hawthorne, but other material as well.

Paraphrasing: 3 Simple Steps R ead actively. 1.Underline significant details. (Remember to use your pencil as your pointer.) 2. Define any unfamiliar vocabulary that you cannot decipher from context clues.

Implied Main Idea Identification and Recognition A sk yourself, “What were the main ideas and details of this paragraph?” Determine the topic of the paragraph by examining the details. Determine what the author is saying about the topic.
