Minister’s Black Veil Redux November 5

Do Now List three or more things you did during your day off! In writing, parallelism is a balance within a sentence of similar phrases or clauses that have the same grammatical structure. (What does this mean?) – EX: Susie weeds the garden, cooked dinner, and cleaned the dishes. – EX: I can be healthy by running every day, eating fruits and vegetables, and by beginning to go to sleep at 9 P.M. Using parallelism, write one sentence including the items you listed at the beginning of class.

Analysis Read p.343: Level 1: How does Mr. Hooper preach? Level 2: “They longed for a breath of wind to blow aside the veil, almost believing that a stranger’s visage would be discovered…” What does visage mean in context? Level 2: Rewrite the above quote in your own words. Read p.345: Level 1: Who is getting married? Level 2: “the same horrible black veil, which had added deeper gloom to the funeral, and could portend nothing but evil at the wedding” What does portend mean in context? Level 2: Rewrite the above quote in your own words.

Analysis Read p.347-348: Level 1: Why does Elizabeth (the minister’s fiancé) leave him? Level 2: “…no darkness between our souls! It is but a mortal veil – not for eternity!” What does mortal mean in context? Level 2: Rewrite the above quote in your own words. Read p.350: Level 1: How long does Mr. Hooper wear the veil? Level 2: “But there was the decorously grave, thought unmoved physician…” What does grave mean in context? Level 2: Rewrite the above quote in your own words.

Plot Lines How does Mr. Hooper preach? (343) Who is getting married? (345) Why does Elizabeth (the minister’s fiancé) leave? (347-348) How long does Mr. Hooper wear the veil? (350)

Level 3 Analysis Read paragraph 2 on p.352 On a blank sheet of paper, answer the following questions in complete sentences: – Level 1: How did the children respond to Mr. Hooper? (according to his dialogue) (1-2 sentences). – Level 2: “when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived…every visage is a Black Veil!” In 2-3 sentences, explain this quote in your own words. – Level 3: What is a lesson I can learn from this? Why does this theme matter? (2-3 sentences)

Quick Write The minister wore the veil as a symbol of “secret sin.” Do you think people are two- faced in our society today? Think of a time when you’ve interacted with someone like this. How did you feel? Use clear examples in your answer (8-10 sentences).
