Horse head Nebula Why I choose this object Information behind this object Image processing information Final processed image Ryan Steinberg & Family
2
Why I choose this object One of the first nebula I ever saw One of the main reasons I am now interested in astronomy First extra-solar object I ever researched (5 th grade) Jerry Lodriguss
3
Information on the Horse head The Horse head itself is known as Barnard 33 The nebula was first recorded in 1888 by Williamina Fleming on photographic plate B2312 taken at the Harvard College Observatory
4
Horse Head Info Part of the Orion Nebula Surrounded by emission nebulae IC434 and NGC 2024 as well as reflection nebula NGC 2023 David Malin
5
Taking the Images 20” cassegrain telescope STL CCD Narrowband filters 6 5min Ha, 9 5min OIII and SII 5 5min darks
6
Taking the Image Narrow band imaging H alpha, SII, OIII Less light pollution from stars More of nebula visible Steve Cannistra
7
Processing the Image CCD Soft Calibrate Align Combine
9
Photoshop Magic happens Levels and curves Choosing images for color channels Better be ready for the long haul
10
Photoshop Gradient filter Repair image tool Color Balance
11
Hubble Pallet Vs RGB Hubble pallet Haplha = green SII = red ESO Halpha = red SII = green More cloud detail with hubble Debate whether hubble or ESO pallet is correct
12
Red Blue Green Normal ESO Pallet
14
Green Blue Red Hubble Pallet
