Geospatial technologies first used for the Census 2001: To support census operations during the pre-enumeration and enumeration phase (planning enumeration areas (EA), printing enumerator maps and census lists) To provide quality maps to accompany census reports To carry out different analyses of data and analyses visualization
3
Prepare digital base for settlements Vector layers for streets, addresses, control regions and enumeration areas. Bind statistical information to basic digital maps Information from censuses about buildings, dwellings, population, and results from other social statistics surveys…It is open Analyse data Control sample distribution when different surveys conducted Prepare maps for statistical publications Maps are extremely informative and persuasive tools …and they may give further meaning to the data We use GIS to:
4
GIS reduces the time and resources necessary for the organization of statistical surveys and gives excellent tools for analysing and presenting results …But you must have quality digital spatial data to do so. Yes, GIS helps, helps a lot! Until 2005 – no source for digital maps of settlements exists From 2006 we started receiving digital polygon layers for parcels and buildings (town by town) from Geodesy, Cartography and Cadaster Agency
5
The problems we find… Lack of high resolution digital spatial base information Differences in the structure and data formats of the national databases Incompleteness of information Lack of resources (human and others…) We have already built spatial database for 27 district cities
6
And we also have very interesting historical spatial data even for the first census conducted in Bulgaria in 1881 but… We have no spatial web dissemination system And that’s our big trouble And the thing we are working upon…
7
Rules for handling confidentiality We have no high spatial resolution data No suppresion for current representation level Policy with respect to licensing and pricing of statistics derived from use of GIS Source must be acknowledged
8
Organisation and number of staff… Until December 2011 - Regional Statistics and GIS Department at the Demographic and Social Statistics Directorate From January 2012 Our team (4 persons) is part of the Key Indicators for National and Regional Policies Department, Statistics of Environment, Infrastructure and Regions Directorate Software in use ESRI ArcGIS 9.3 Desktop
9
Availability of basis geostatistical units (georeferenced- population, dwellings, buildings) Residential buildings address point layer with id-links to Dwellings and resident population (appr. 50% of the total country population is georeferenced )
10
appr. 50% of the population is georeferenced

and also… Streets linear layer Control regions and enumeration areas – polygon layers Districts - polygon Municipalities - polygon Settlements (area owned) – polygon Statistical regions- polygon

THE PROJECT GEOSTAT 1B TASKS: Representing census data in European population grid on resolution 1x1km Improvement of methodologies Unification of methods for presentation in the common European grid To provide qualitative data, the raw material for spatial analysis Bulgarian NSI and
13
We are Bulgarian NSI has not practical experience in: Grid presentations of statistics Disaggregation methods We join directly at the second stage of the project (GEOSTAT 1B). WHY? ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS creating a real demographic picture of the population
14
Bulgaria will apply mixed method of aggregation and disaggregation In GEOSTAT1B
