17L OQC Do Now: Multiplying by Dividing 9/8/11 1. A human body cell has 46 chromosomes. If your big toe is made of 1million cells, how many chromosomes are in your big toe? 3. If a young plant gone began as one cell and has gone through mitosis 10 different times, how many cells does it have? 2. A red blood cell has a cell cycle that lasts for 120 days. How many hours does it live? Most of its life is spent in which phase? (interphase, mitosis, or cytokinesis)
3
17L OQC 2. The cell lives for 2, 880 hours and is in interphase for most of its life. (120 days x 24 hours = 2880 hours) Do Now ANSWERS 9/8/11 1. 1 million cells x 46 chromosomes each cell 46 million chromosomes (in the big toe!) 3. 1 original cell (1 st mitosis) 2 cells (2 nd mitosis) 4 cells (3 rd mitosis) 8 cells (4 th mitosis) 16 cells (5 th mitosis) 32 cells (6 th mitosis) 64 cells (7 th mitosis) 128 cells (8 th mitosis) 256 cells (9 th mitosis) 512 cells (10 th mitosis) 1,024 cells

17R 17L 9/8/11 OQC Do Now: Multiplying by Dividing! Write a paragraph that explains how we acted out cell division and why this helps you understand the phrase “Multiplying by Dividing.” Title: Cell Cycle Standard 1e: Students know that cells divide to increase their numbers through the process of mitosis. Objective: Students will explain what happens at each stage of cell division. Vocabulary Words: Please see page 16R. Please tape the crossword puzzle into your notebook HERE!!! Crossword Vocab Review-- Cell Division Please tape the “The 3 Stages of the Cell Cycle” into your notebook HERE!!! Notes: The 3 Stages of the Cell Cycle

17R 9/8/11 OQC Notes: The 3 Stages of the Cell Cycle Please turn to page 130 and read the first paragraph Please look at the pictures on page 131, 132, and 133. Please use the textbook to fill out the flow chart for 1. Interphase 2. Mitosis 3. Cytokinesis Before you get started, write 1 QUESTION you have about the cell cycle ON THE BACK of the notes. While you are taking notes, please answer the question. When you are finished, please work on the crossword puzzle. These words will be on the quiz. Now lets practice for QUIZ #3 !!!! 1. Mitosis Flashcards—you will work in pairs 2. Mitosis Model—you will work in tables 3. Mitosis Role Play I will need: 4 chromatids and 2 centrioles Cell part = Material used to represent it Nuclear envelope = Tan yarn Chromatin = Colorful string Centrioles = paperclips Spindle Fibers = Black yarn Chromatid = Colorful pipe cleaner Centromeres = Black beads Cytoplasm = Green paper
