2 Facebook ■1.55 billion people worldwide ■30 million people in the UK – around half the UK population ■51% women, 49% men – representative of the population as a whole ■60% of people online have a Facebook account ■26% of users are aged 25 – 34 ■Average age increasing

3 YouTube ■1 billion users worldwide ■4 billion YouTube videos are watched daily ■90% of users are over 18, with 50% being over 35 ■Males tend to watch more videos, and younger people tend to be on YouTube longer than older people ■Membership rate is almost 50/50 male/female ■Females spend a lot of time watching beauty tutorials, males watching sports and gaming videos. Both watch a lot of pet videos.

4 Instagram ■400 million monthly active users worldwide ■Over 60 million photos shared daily ■Over 50% of 18 – 29 year olds use Instagram. Is the top social network for teens ■51% male, 49% female ■Owned by Facebook ■In 2012 Instagram had 40 million users, and has collected over 300 million users in just three years

5 LinkedIn ■380 million users ■Users age 30 – 49 year olds – career development stage! ■Higher useage by 50 – 64 year olds than 18 – 29 year olds ■24% of male internet users have a LinkedIn profile, compared to 19% of female internet users ■Highly educated, high income

6 Twitter ■316 million users ■15 million active users in the UK ■37% of Twitter’s users are aged 18 – 29 ■Again, almost 50/50 split in gender ■Higher income, reasonable to higher education levels ■80% of users access Twitter on a mobile device

7 Google+ ■User numbers unclear ■12.6million registered members in the UK, but only 3.9 million active ■75% male ■7 minutes per month average with only 22% of online adults visiting at least once a month ■Rumours of Google+’s demise

8 Pinterest ■100 million users worldwide – 2 million in the UK ■2012 saw a 786% increase in traffic ■62% of users are women, though could be as high as 80% ■Food and drink takes up 20% of all pins

9 Periscope ■Success story of 2015 ■10 million worldwide users and growing ■1.85 million daily active users – 1% of internet users ■29% of Periscopes are by women ■More popular with 16 – 24 year olds ■Just slightly ahead in user numbers than rival Meerkat
