The Eggs Arrived §On Tuesday, March 12, 2002 we received 10 eggs §First, we put X’s on one side and O’s on the other §Then, numbered them 1-10 §We set up a nurturing schedule so everyone helped take care of the eggs §Every hour we turned them so they wouldn’t get stuck to one side of the shell End

Handling Tips §Treat them like an infant - Be gentle! §Be sure there’s water so the inside of the egg stays moist §Check the temperature! It should be between 99.5-100.5 degrees §Wash your hands when you are finished End

What we learned §Chicks started out as an embryo §Inside the shell the chick’s food is the yolk §The temperature has to stay between 99.5-100.5 § Chicks get air from tiny holes in the shell § The chick floats in a sac called the amnion sac §We received the eggs at the 14th day of incubation §It takes the chick 21 days to hatch §They used their egg tooth to get out of their shell End

They’re Hatching §First, two eggs had pecks in them §After a few hours the chick started to peck their way out §During the night five chicks hatched §Two more hatched the next day § The next day two more hatched after we left §The chicks were really tired and wet §A couple hours later the chick gets fluffy and active §Then, we put the chicks in a box with a light to keep them warm Click on the chick for a diagram End

How We Felt §We felt really happy and relieved because nine chicks hatched §The MOST Mrs. Henry’s class ever had §It was so much fun to play with them §They felt soft and furry §They were fragile and light §Hearing them peeping all day was cool End

After the Hatching §Fed them cornmeal §Gave them water in little cups §They fell asleep on top of each other §Named them: Henry, Spike, Gasman, Rocko, Rocky, Pokey, Meanie, Whitey and Devil §Played with them on the mats §Changed their paper towels §Held them carefully §Visitors - Miss DeLiberty’s Class, Mrs. Meenan’s Class, The Marinelli End
