Measuring Forest Products
2
What do we Measure? In forestry it is important that we understand how to measure two things: Trees Heights Diameters Land Square Feet Acreage Directions Bearings
3
Measuring Tree Heights When measuring tree heights we need two tools: A Loggers Tape Used to measure 66’ away from the tree to gain a accurate reading. A Clinometer Used to determine the actual tree height
4
Steps to Measuring Tree Height After reaching 66’ from the tree, look through the clinometer until you see a reading of 0. Look down at the base of the tree, that number will be A. Look up at the top of the tree to where green meets blue, that number will be B To find the total height of the tree add B from A.
5
Steps to Measuring Tree Diameter Correct tree height is determined at a height of 4.5’. After finding 4.5’, use the Diameter tape to determine the diameter of the tree. Standard rounding rules apply 12.6” = 13” diameter 14.2” = 14” diameter

Shooting Bearings Bearings are direction that contain two cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and a degree from 0 to 90. To take bearings you have to use a quadrant compass. Bearings are read N 82E
