The Writing Process The How’s and Why’s

The Topic  The topic may be chosen or given but no matter where it comes, from you have a task of convincingly and clearly communicating information about the topic.

Brainstorming Why is it important to brainstorm?  Most often students struggle with adding detail and explanation when writing.  They have “run out” of ideas.  Not sure what information to include or what is appropriate.  Difficulty with forming an opinion or thesis.

Brainstorming (2)  Brainstorming helps with all of these issues even though it tends to be tedious at times.  When done properly, brainstorming will allow you to come up with all the information or ideas you need to complete a wonderful essay.  Brainstorming is a collection of ideas around one particular topic.

Brainstorm (3)  When you have a well done brainstorm you have a strong foundation for a strong essay!  Brainstorms do not have to be created alone. Talk to a partner or get ideas from other places or resources.  Just be sure to always site your sources. DO NOT STEAL OTHER PEOPLES WORK!

Organization= The Outline  The purpose of the outline is to organize your information. You don’t want to have an essay that has is disorganized and repetitive. Outlines help us as writers to be more efficient at getting our points across and being better communicators. Which is the goal for the English 10, 11 and 12 courses (and you).

Rough Draft  What needs to be done as a first attempt at getting our ideas down on paper in a somewhat organized fashion. This draft is meant to be a working document. It will alter and change right up to the point that it is printed off and handed in to the teacher.

Editing  We edit with a different colour then what we wrote the rough draft with. This is done so that we will see the errors we made and can correct them easily. Try to always have a trusted friend or parent/guardian edit your work for a second time. Typically they will pick up on mistakes we make that we did not detect.

Final draft  Times New Roman- size 12 font  Double spaced  Sources sited with a bibliography  Cover page with title of essay in the center.  Your name and class and (due) date on the bottom right hand corner or centered (see examples to follow)

The Proper Order When the whole process is being asked for the order you place your work is as follows: 1. Cover Page 2. Final Product 3. Rough draft with edits 4. Organized outline 5. Brainstorm 6. Make sure it is neat and stapled prior to arriving to class. F.Y.I. This should be the case with all assignments to be handed in to any teacher!
