A day that will come quickly. A result that will last forever. English literature 23 rd May 2016 (2 hours) and 27 th May 2015 (2 hours) English language 7th June 2016 (1 hour reading and 1 hour writing)

Work completed so far. The controlled assessments, 40% of the GCSE, have all been completed. We have worked hard to ensure your son goes into the exams with the best mark possible. We are giving him a head start going into the exams. Lesson time is now spent on refining the skills needed for the exams.

Unit 1 – The Reading Paper TIME – 60 MINUTES READ 2 NON-FICTION TEXTS ANSWER 4 QUESTIONS EACH OUT OF 10 KEY SKILLS Reading and understanding what the question requires Retrieving important information supporting ideas through references and quotations Interpreting and reading between the lines Timing – don’t spend more than 15 minutes per question – all worth 10 marks each.

How can you help with Unit 1 Revision? TIME – using a past paper, give your son 15 minutes to answer each question (including reading time) – timing is crucial QUIZ – if you’ve watched or read something together, ask the WHY? WHEN? HOW? WHO? WHERE? to develop their understanding CHALLENGE – as part of any discussion, push them to explain the reasoning behind their ideas. REMEMBER – TV and radio are full of non-fiction. You can apply the same ideas to documentaries, speeches, blogs, web pages, chat shows, factual programs (e.g. Top Gear etc…)

Unit 2 – The Writing Paper TIME – 60 MINUTES ANSWER 2 QUESTIONS KEY SKILLS Write with awareness of purpose, audience and format Structure writing for impact and organise it through use of paragraphs Write accurately with attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar Question set in November 2013: You live near a large school. You decide to complain about the behaviour of pupils on their way to and from the school. Write your letter to the Head teacher. The quality of your writing is more important than its length. You should write about one to two pages in your answer book.

How can you help with Unit 2 Revision? TIME: Each writing task should take 30 minutes. Your son can use past papers to practise on at home. You can help him by timing him. PAF: get your son to tell you what the Purpose, Audience and Format of his task are. ENCOURAGEMENT: get him to read every day; magazine articles, guide books, leaflets, letters etc with attention to the style they are written in and their intended purpose (this will give him more confidence about writing in these formats himself). ACCURACY Point out incorrectly spelled words to him or missed capital letters for names.
