14-2 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e Safety in the gas industry The gas industry’s standards and codes are set to prevent hazardous situations from arising, but from time to time things do go wrong. Hazards of escaping unburnt gas are: 1.fire 2.explosion 3.asphyxiation Hazards of partially burnt gas are: 1.asphyxiation 2.carbon monoxide poisoning
3
Handling a gas-affected building If gas is present in a building and likely to cause a hazard, factors to consider are as follows: 1.Turn off the gas supply to the building. 2.If necessary, evacuate the building. 3.Eliminate ignition sources. 4.Ventilate the building. 5.Notify gas supplier. 6.Do not enter the affected area unless wearing appropriate breathing equipment, harness and safety line. 7.Check adjacent buildings to ensure escaped gas has not entered them. 14-3 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e

Handling LPG emergencies Gas escaping at cylinders with fire Determine length of time cylinder has been on fire - BLEVE may occur (boiling liquid expanding vaporising explosion) If a cylinder were to explode (BLEVE), people in the area would be at risk from fire and flying metal. 14-4 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e

LPG cylinder emergencies 1.Evacuate the area 2.Notify fire brigade If pressure relief blowing and gas is on fire but not in contact with cylinder, the following is recommended: 1.Check to ensure there is no unburnt gas in the area. Spray water onto the top section of the cylinder. Do not extinguish fire. 2.When the pressure relief valve reseals, turn off the gas and remove the cylinder. 14-5 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e

LPG tank emergencies Tanker fires require specialist equipment and personnel. Evacuate area to at least 300m radius. Notify fire brigade and other authorities. 14-6 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e

Carbon monoxide poisoning Some or all of the following symptoms may be present: 1.Giddiness. 2.Lack of control of muscles. 3.Shortness of breath. 4.Semi-consciousness. 5.A sense of wellbeing. 6.Lips, nose, ears and cheeks becoming bright cherry red in colour. 14-7 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e

Asphyxiation—effects and symptoms Asphyxiation is a lack of oxygen in the blood. It is caused by a build-up of gases at the expense of air. Symptoms: 1.Faintness. 2.Weakness. 3.Partial or complete lack of consciousness. 4.Sense of wellbeing. 5.Lack of ability to do simple tasks. 6.Lips and cheeks becoming blue in colour. 7.Facial features becoming blue-grey—the person may be unconscious at this stage. 14-8 Copyright 2010 McGraw-Hill Australia Pty Ltd PowerPoint slides to accompany Puffett, Hossack, Stone, Burn & Miles, Gasfitting 2e
