S CIENCE M AY 7 TH AND M AY 8 TH Grab your chromebook and return to your seat

WARM UP LABEL THE FOLLOWING ORGANISMS AS PRODUCERS, CONSUMERS, DECOMPOSERS MUSHROOMS SUNFLOWERS WORMS SHARKS ELEPHANTS CORN

VOLUNTEERS…. DID YOU GET THESE RIGHT? MUSHROOMS - DECOMPOSERS SUNFLOWERS - PRODUCERS WORMS - DECOMPOSERS SHARKS - CONSUMERS ELEPHANTS - CONSUMERS CORN - PRODUCERS

WORKSHEET You will be recording information on this worksheet Make sure your name is on your paper Today’s focus: 6.L.2.3 Biomes

AGENDA Today we will be learning about ecosystems and biomes along with the various terms scientists use to describe the different levels

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK : Ecology : study of how organisms interact with their environment and one another Ecologists: study animals and their environments at different levels Ecologist Jane Goodall : Studied chimpanzees in Africa for over 50 years

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK : Ecosystems = all the organisms living in the same area AND their nonliving environment.

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Abiotic Factors = all nonliving factors TemperatureAmount of sunlight Water (fresh or salty)Climate (rain, weather) Soil (rocky, sandy, fertile)

W RITE IN NOTEBOOK Biotic Factors: all living factors Plants (producers) Animals (consumers)

B RAIN P OP V IDEO – E COSYTEMS You will be watching the video to answer the following questions: 1. How are ecosystems categorized? 2. What is a population? 3. What is a habitat? Now let’s review our answers….

D ID YOU KNOW ? Scientists group living things based on similar characteristics Scientists use an Ecosystem Pyramid to show these relationships

T URN YOUR HANDOUT OVER We will work to complete An Ecosystem Organization Pyramid

W RITE ON H ANDOUT Individual organism: 1 specific type of organism

DRAW ON H ANDOUT Individual organism: pick 1 specific type of organism and draw it in the top triangle

W RITE ON WORKSHEET Population : groups of the same organism living in the same area; able to produce offspring

DRAW ON WORKSHEET Population : think of the organism you drew in the top triangle and draw 4 of those same organisms now

W RITE ON HANDOUT Community : Many different populations interacting with each other

DRAW ON HANDOUT Community : think of different Populations that can live together Draw them now!

W RITE ON HANDOUT Ecosystem : the community of living organisms along with their nonliving environments

W RITE ON HANDOUT Ecosystem : think of all the nonliving things within the community you drew before Draw that now

W RITE ON HANDOUT Biomes : areas of similar climates with similar plants and animals found in specific regions around the Earth

A DD THESE BIOME NAMES NOW TO HANDOUT

W RITE ON HANDOUT Biosphere: Is EVERYTHING…

DRAW ON HANDOUT Biosphere: Is EVERYTHING… draw Earth

B RAIN P OP : L AND BIOMES http://www.brainpop.com/ We are watching and listening to the video to answer the following questions on your worksheet

B RAIN P OP : L AND BIOMES http://www.brainpop.com/ 1. What is a biome? 2. What factors determine the plants and animals found in biomes? 3. List the 6 main biomes found on Earth?

H OW DID WE DO ? 1. What is a biome? 2. What factors determine the plants and animals found in biomes? 3. List the 6 main biomes found on Earth?

D ID YOU GET THESE ? Rain forest Grassland Temperate Forest Desert Tiaga Tundra

D IFFERENT B IOMES … Biomes have unique plants and animals They also have unique climates (rainfall, temperatures, amounts and intensity of sunlight) For instance: A tropical rainforest has lots of rain, is humid and hot. Plants grow thick and deep in the rainforest; animals have adapted to this unique environment in order to survive

V IDEO ON B IOMES – A VISUAL JOURNEY https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=hIy0ZlyPPDg

L IMITING F ACTORS : Factors that limit the population sizes of plants and animals found in a particular ecosystem. Factors can include: Amount of sunlight Temperature Amount of organic matter in soil Availability of water Number of Predators Number of competors Availability of shelter / space

T IME TO GERMINATE SEEDS !!!

We will take time to discuss our next unit… We will be germinating seeds over the weekend to use next week in class We will be investigating seeds and tropism next week Today we will be working with bean seeds!

I F TIME PERMITS … VIDEO http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=video+on+b iomes+and+ecosystems&FORM=VIRE2#view=de tail&mid=204953D846E2BA122B84204953D846 E2BA122B84

A CTIVITY Now close your eyes… Imagine you are in a rainforest Sounds of the rainforest.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg3W11G4In0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg3W11G4In0

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Imagine an animal you could find in the rainforest — now think of something you know about this animals. Think about your animal alone as an individual species. What does it look like? How does it move? How does it obtain food?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Now imagine this animal interacting with others of its kind. Does your animal live alone or in a group? How does it take care of its young? How does it interact with other adults ?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Next think of other types of living things your animal might interact with. What does it eat? What eats it? Does it depend on grasses or trees for shelter or making a nest? Does it compete with other types of animals for food?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Next think of the non-living things that your animal interacts with. Where does it make its home? Where does it find water? What type of soil does it live on? What is the weather like where it lives?

C LOSE YOUR EYES! Finally, think about your organism in relationship to the whole planet Earth. Imagine a picture of the Earth from space. Where on the planet does your animal live? How does its life affect the lives around it? Does its life affect you?

N OW OPEN YOUR EYES …. In this activity, we ZOOMED out from 1 INDIVIDUAL species to the WHOLE planet known as the biosphere.

I N YOUR NOTEBOOK … Write down all the things you need to make the BEST ice cream sundae EVER! Add at least ten things. Be detailed ! Best ice cream sundae creator gets CANDY !

W ORKSHEET Read “Biomes and Ecosystems” in pairs. You have 6 minutes.

W ORKSHEET Read “Earth’s Biomes” silently and answer the questions You have 10 minutes.

T HINK -P AIR -S HARE Think of the MOST important THREE things you learned Now share with your neighbor. Now talk as a class.

B ILL N YE E XPLAINS IT BEST … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFeRFmqFChQ
