2 Education  Most did not get a formal education  Some could read and write  Would learn the skills they needed to manage their home

3 Maintaining the Household  Main job: manage the home  Responsible for  Raising children, cooking meals, sewing clothes, weaving cloth, and keeping the house in order  Teaching children how to be “good” citizens / men / women / British subjects / etc

4 Work  Even though women did not “work” outside the home, they generally were working from sun up to sun down  Would prepare meals, mend clothes, make baskets, do laundry, preserve food, tend to the livestock, make candles, dye clothes, work in the garden, teach children, etc…

5 Rules and Legal Status  Colonial women had almost no legal rights or freedoms  Had to obey the man in their life (father / brother / husband)  Not allowed to vote / hold public office  A married woman was represented by her husband  Could be beaten by their husbands or forcibly returned if they ran away  Could NOT make a will or own property

6 Jamestown: A Case Study  When the colony was fighting for survival – the colony was egalitarian  This means that men and women were equal  WHY?  Once Jamestown became a more permanent colony, it became more patriarchal  What is a patriarchy?

7 Jamestown: A Case Study  By the mid-17 th century, lawmakers were using race & gender to create two distinct roles for Virginia women  Good Wife:  Free and white  Performed domestic work in her home and raised her children  Agricultural Laborer:  Poor, enslaved, and black

8 Differing Spheres  Public  In the workforce  Economic and political powers  Private  In the home  Religious and cultural powers

9 Jamestown: A Case Study  Pretend you are living in colonial Jamestown. Write a journal entry describing your everyday life. Remember to include elements of gender. Must be 1 page long At least 5 paragraphs 6+ sentences per paragraph Grammatically and mechanically correct (no spelling errors) Use real historical examples and events!
