25. Using stem cells In 2012 scientists in America were able to re-program embryonic stem cells to form into cartilage cells to produce a replacement human outer ear. The ear needed a blood supply to grow, so they implanted it under the skin of a laboratory mouse. The ear was eventually transplanted onto the head of a 9 year old boy who had lost his ear in a car accident and risked deafness. The boy is now able to hear normally and lead a normal life. Stem cells obtained in this way often result in the destruction of the developing embryo. Embryonic stem cells are the most useful of all stem cell types as they can turn into any type of body cell.
