Safety Grant
2
I was directed several months ago to perform an analysis of our safety grant program and make a recommendation……without hesitation my recommendation is “YES” to continue to fund the grant!
3
I know on “paper” it sometimes does not appear that we are reaching this goal but we are. The following slides will, hopefully, explain how we are making a difference
4
Workers’ Compensation premiums are based on: * Payroll *Modification Rating *Loss Ratio *Cost Incurred
5
Premiums: PremiumPayroll ‘07 – ’08$272,725$33,331,909 ‘08 – ’09$286,340$35,935,210 ‘09 – ’10$245,997$37,091,200 ‘10 – ’11$211,328$42,414,728 We are paying $61,397 less in premium for $9,082,819 in coverage!
6
Modification Ratings: ’07 – ’08.88 ’08 – ’091.09 ’09 – ’101.09 ‘10 – ’11.97
7
Loss Ratio: ‘07 – ’0845.31 % ‘08 – ’0967.13 % ‘09 – ’1056.40 %
8
Cost Incurred: ‘07 – ’08$146,038.85 ‘08 – ’09$211,298.25 ‘09 – ’10$138,733.79 If you ask “why” are the cost incurred less when we have more incidences. The answer is that we are returning employees to work quicker and that directly impacts the cost. A pat on the back to our district for allowing employees to work within restrictions for short periods of time!

What have we have learned? Reliable data is key…..the data that we have begun collecting and tracking helps us zero in on problem areas. We are able to identify and correct the “right” safety hazards. Communication is essential…….we send a report out ASAP informing employees that an incident has occurred and what we are doing to correct the hazard. Collaboration works………working together from the administrative office, the campuses, the vision teams, and the employees can solve a hazard faster than one person sitting in an office trying to determine the best course of action. Training is necessary………with the data in hand we can focus our training dollars and time on the repetitive hazards that we have identified.

The following two (2) schools split the safety grant this year. They won the grant for having both the lowest incident ratio and for having zero safety incidences for 2009-2010! Congratulations for a job well done! Vancleave Upper Elementary $7,500 Vancleave Middle School $7,500

One Final Thought: Remember, the safety grant money HAS to be spent on educational improvement projects! This grant is being spent on “our kids” to enhance their education.
