REVIEW PROCESS REQUIREMENTS Application Form Transcript(s) Portfolio Essay Letter of Circumstance (Optional)

APPLICATION FORM Place one copy in the first page of your portfolio. Submit one copy with the rest of your materials.

TRANSCRIPTS Submit official transcripts of academic record for all college/universities previously attended (even if you only took once course). Transcripts from the University of Maryland may be unofficial and may be from TESTUDO so as to include your Spring 2016 courses.

ESSAY You must write a one to two (1-2) page(s) word processed essay on one of the following: Why do you want to pursue Architecture as a major? Who/What inspires you to pursue an Architecture-related field? Why is Architecture important to society? What is an Architect's responsibility to society? How do Architecture and Sustainability relate to each other? Please note, this is not a research paper. Please describe your thoughts and opinions as opposed to reporting only the facts. If you do use sources, CITE THEM!

LETTER OF CIRCUMSTANCE You may optionally submit an additional personal statement that describes any extenuating circumstances relevant to your application.

PORTFOLIO Submit a portfolio by the stated deadline Your work must be submitted in an 8 1/2” x 11” black portfolio or three-ring binder (not to exceed 1/2” in thickness) with plastic sleeves. The first page of your portfolio should be a copy of the application form. Please place your UMD Identification Number in the upper left hand corner on the inside of the front cover. –MUST BE IN THIS FORMAT!

PORTFOLIO - PART 2 Five (5) original drawings executed freehand in pencil on 8 1/2” x 11” sketch paper (such as Strathmore). –They shall not be copies or work other than the applicant’s and shall not be computer drawings. Be sure to clearly label each drawing. Drawings must be submitted in 8 1/2” x 11” plastic sleeves and placed in the following order.

PORTFOLIO – Page2 An interior one-point perspective view of a significant architectural space. This drawing is required to be made from life. Drawings made from photographs are not acceptable. Pencil, line drawing with line weight.

PORTFOLIO – Page 3 An exterior two-point perspective view of a significant work of architecture. (e.g. church, city hall, museum, university building, theater, library, memorial, etc.) This drawing is required to be made from life. Drawings made from photographs are not acceptable. Pencil, shade and shadow and line weight.

PORTFOLIO – Page 4 A human hand or foot. This drawing is required to be made from life. Drawings made from photographs are not acceptable. Pencil, shade and shadow with line weight.

PORTFOLIO – Page 5 A composed portion of one of the following: a bicycle, a wooden or steel frame chair (not a stuffed chair), or the branch structure of a tree. This drawing is required to be made from life. Drawings made from photographs are not acceptable. Pencil, line drawing with line weight.

PORTFOLIO – Page 6 One of the following architectural details: –a building cornice –a column capital –a balustrade –another architectural ornamentation. The detail should be studied up close and shown as a fragment. This drawing is required to be made from life. Drawings made from photographs are not acceptable. Pencil, shade and shadow with line weight.

PORTFOLIO - PART 3 Five Artworks of your choice: Freehand drawings, paintings, architectural models, and/or design work that you have done on your own or from courses such as ARCH 101, ARCH 150, ARCH 242, ARCH170, or ARTT courses. Maximum 2 drawings from ARCH242 Do not submit originals. These drawings should be photographed or scanned and reproduced in an 8” x 10” format and put into an 8 1/2” x 11” plastic sleeve. While you can include photographs as a means to replicate your work, DO NOT include photography!
