Comments on your first drafts Each of you (that handed in a draft) should now have it back with comments from me – for subsequent drafts we will verbally discuss them and you can take notes Some issues are with phrasing/quality of written work – I shouldn’t be changing this for you so a useful activity could be for a parent/friend to read through it and check it is coherent Look at annotated mark scheme – is your work at L5 in all respects? Some of you may find it useful to return to your plan – define what each paragraph is about, what quotes you are using, are your paragraphs in the most sensible order? It would be a useful activity for all of you to write a bullet point list of your paragraphs and what is in them, then look at it and see how you could improve your structure Go through my checklist of feedback and critically evaluate your own work as I can’t comment on everything

Structure reminders When I mark your essay I should be able to clearly tell what statement you are making in your paragraph and see that you have proven it with evidence Your intro should set up the main opposing quotes and the factors you’ll be considering You then debate the factors through to a conclusion in your final paragraph (don’t state this in your introduction) Debate and mini conclusions should be woven in throughout your essay, don’t save it all for the end You should be quoting historians throughout and using evidence to support/refute what they say – historian based essay with contextual knowledge to explain their views

Writing your sources essay 500 words (only 20 word flexibility either way) Have a look at the examples I have copied for you and the difference between the ones who scored 10/10 and 6/10 for example – don’t lose easy marks! It could be the difference between an A and an A* Don’t leave it until the last week to write – you should go through a drafting process with this too Try to evaluate approximately 6 sources Good to bring in primary sources as well as secondary sources and quote from them

Writing your sources essay Ensure you’ve actually used the sources you are evaluating Compare the utility of different sources Identify a particular interpretation and how that might blinker the author to other views Usefulness of the source in relation to its target audience e.g. don’t call it simplistic if it’s for an A-Level audience For each source: who is the audience, what are it’s limitations, how did it help, were there gaps in your knowledge that you needed to consult other sources for, did the sources build on each other?
