2.  SAILS is a standardized multiple choice test that is used to evaluate basic knowledge about a variety of information literacy (IL) skills  SAILS results in data reports that clearly describe performance of groups of students  SAILS provides data for both internal and external benchmarking  Project SAILS is an initiative of Kent State University in partnership with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL)

3. As defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL): “information literacy is a set of abilities that require individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”

7.  In both 2007 and 2008, students at Jackson State University performed worse than the institution type benchmark on all SAILS skill sets.  In 2007, students who were identified as Mass Communication/Journalism majors most often performed about the same as the institution-type benchmark.  In 2008, students who were identified as Engineering/Computer Science majors most often performed about the same as the institution-type benchmark.
