2. The Book The title of my book is The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding From You. It was written by Eli Pariser. It was published in May 2011.

3. Overview Eli Pariser talks about how the Internet filters everything we see when we “log on”. For instance he shows how everyone’s webpage is specifically tailored to them by showing the reader that if you and a friend were to Google the same exact words you may have different results. He also mentions how these filters are totally transparent, which can be very harmful to the user because they are not notified on what is being censored.

4. Potential Issues With The Filter Bubble Issues with the filter bubble are: It limits creativity and learning on the internet. For example, by only exposing people to what they are already aware of it limits their motivation of seeking new ideas. It gives companies very important information about it’s users. The filter bubble exposes consumer weaknesses that every person possesses, for instance if you were once looking at buying something online you will notice that it pops up on the side of your Facebook page or any other web page you visit. Makes it easy to avoid global issues or public affairs. “A squirrel dying in your front yard might be more relevant to your current interest than people dying in Africa” – Mark Zuckerberg

6. Solutions to the Filter Bubble Always delete your cookies. Erase your web history, as inconvenient as it may be. Set Facebook settings on private as can be. Turn off targeted ads. Use multiple search engines not just Google.

7. Relevance The filter bubble is 100% relevant to this class as every assignment we do comes derives from something on the Internet. The title of this class “Living in a Networked World” and the title of the book “What the Internet is Hiding From You”. The books explains how we are living less and less in a networked world because we are being confined to our own personal bubble. I would say that this book is a must read for anyone that took this class.
