BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Grade Separation Inspection and Rating

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Grade Separation Form Applies to structures which have traffic going over and under Replaces channel section Has items specific to under/overpass rather than channels Generated automatically Can be requested for blank forms

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Grade Separation Form Generated for following usage types –GS - vehicular grade separation –PS - pedestrian grade separation –RO - railway overpass –RU - railway underpass –SP - stockpass or cattlepass

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Grade Separation Form Different sections for bridges and culverts Bridge Section

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Different sections for bridges and culverts Culvert Section Grade Separation Form

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Road Alignment Refers to alignment up to and through the Bridge/Culvert including surface condition Look for: –Cracks, heaves & roughness –Super elevation & orientation –Accessibility for stock –Collision potential If reduced vertical clearance, rate 4 or less If access for stock difficult, rate 4 or less –Normally not a factor Railways rate “X”

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Roadway Surface Refers to the surfacing along the floor of the culvert Purpose is to provide a surface for stock/traffic –Smooth surface –No holes, depressions or projections –Not slippery Record type of surface –Concrete –Gravel –Asphalt Record the presence of icing on the roadway by Yes or No Inspect and rate with respect to purpose and type of traffic If defects a problem for stock/traffic, rate 4 or less –If hazard, rate 2 or less (holes, slippery, projections, icing)

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Traffic Safety Features Refers to guardrails, clearance signs, crash protection, etc. Not applicable for stock underpasses Indicate type or leave blank and rate “X” Rate to reflect overall condition

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Slope Protection Refers to protection system on headslopes Look for: –evidence of settlement –cracked, broken or bulging concrete protection –voids under concrete slabs Note graffiti Good condition but appearance unattractive –Rate 7 Settled & moving downwards –Rate 4 Broken & significant voids –Rate 3

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Bank Stability Refers to stability of bridge headslopes Look for: –damage or displacement –settlement at abutment and piers –bulging at toe of slope –loss of material at toe of slope Stable but settled 100 mm or more –Rate 7 Instability affecting sub or superstructure –Rate 4 or less Instability requiring monitoring –Rate 4 or less

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Drainage Refers to the ability of the underpass to: –prevent water entering culvert –drain water out of culvert –disposal of water at toe of headslope Sources of water –Enter from ends –Leakage through barrel Some underpasses are also designed for water flow –See “Special Comments for Next Inspection”

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Drainage Look for: –Water entering the underpass –Hazard due to wet or icy floor –Inhibition of stock passage due to ponding at ends or inside –Erosion of material on floor or at ends –Ponding at toe of headslopes and ditches –Damage to floor, approaches or ditches If water enters an underpass not designed for flow, rate 5 or less If ponding inside or at ends, rate 4 or less If inhibits passage of traffic, rate 3 or less If erosion damage to floor or approaches, rate 3 or less If contributes to hazard, rate 2 or less

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Lighting Refers to lighting in tunnels Not applicable for stock underpasses - rate X Damage to conduit, fixtures - rate 4 or less Bulb replacement - Rate 3

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Barrel Leakage Refers to leakage through the barrel of the culvert Indicate presence by Yes or No (if yes, explain) Rating is not required but if “Yes” leakage may effect rating of: –Roadway surface –Drainage

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Structure In Use Refers to whether the Stock underpass is used for it’s intended purpose Indicate “In Use” by Yes or No Provide explanation if “No”

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings General Rating Critical Elements –Road alignment –Roadway surface (includes icing and barrel leakage) –Drainage (includes barrel leakage

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Grade Separation Inspection & Ratings Other Considerations Normally these are not applicable (rate “X”) –scour and scour protection at ends –fish passage in barrel –waterway adequacy in barrel If designed to handle water flow –Note in “Special Comments for Next Inspection” (This culvert provides drainage. 07/02/2001) –Inspect and provide ratings for: scour and scour protection at ends fish passage waterway adequacy
