1 1 PM report Schedule comment Coupling magnets Major staffing concerns Andy Nichols, STFC, UKNF/MICE PSAG, 19-7-11

2 Schedule comment Much discussion over MICE schedule recently: OsC, MPB, CM30, FAC We can say: Step IV can be ready by Q3 2012 with reasonable confidence We will aim to have Step V ready for running before the long ISIS shutdown in August, 2014, BUT this is critically dependent on the CC magnet delivery plan If the above cannot be achieved, MICE will assess the possibility of combining Steps V & VI to be ready as soon after the long shutdown as possible 2

3 Coupling magnets Even if everything goes to plan, our ‘aimed for’ date of August 2014 for Step V only works if the RFCC #1 can be delivered by April 2013 AN thinks this is impossible, the present baseline is: that the MuCool and both MICE magnets built in series by the US/China group We must work in parallel, to even keep our self-imposed schedule, let alone improve on it Plan to test first CC coil in US is being formed Promising discussions with US Groups – Qi-Huan could supply three kits of parts, then: US assembles the MuCool magnet UK/US assembles the two MICE magnets in parallel – like to think we can be part of that plan Our only chance is to think like this! 3

4 Major staffing concerns Roy Preece’s appointment as part of magnet partnership has been a conspicuous success –Largely because of this, a request has been made for a counterpart on the Coupling magnets – believe we should strongly support this Willie Spensley’s departure (see last month) is very serious Although we are not breaking any CDM rules (AN and VF are the default), the situation is not sustainable Need to get feedback soon from the Resources Forum on: Creation of CVN for Principal Contractor Retention of the two fitters (who have employment rights under TUPE) Extension of the present Merit contract while the above is sorted out (six months minimum) We have until when the present contract expires on September 15 th I need a course of action, with decision points and timescales from TD/HR/Resources Forum 4
