1 NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Home to the Wildcats

2 Basic Information  Northern Michigan University is located in the Upper Peninsula in the city Marquette, MI.  The 360-acre campus is known for its safe, clean environment.  This four-university offers 180 degree programs to nearly 9,400 students.

3 Admissions  For an incoming freshman, the required GPA to be admitted is 2.5 (recomputed).  For a transfer student, the required GPA is 3.0.  The average incoming ACT score for freshmen is 23.

4 The Surrounding Area As was stated, the surrounding area is located in Marquette, MI, in the Upper Peninsula. Its total population is around 21,000 people. – It can get over 25,000 during the school year. Statistically, it is one of the snowiest cities in the U.S. It is on the coast of the great Lake Superior. It was rated “3 rd Best City to Raise a Family In” by Forbes Magazine.

5 Programs  Superior Edge  Program that lets students explore citizenship, diversity awareness, leadership, and real- world experience.  Any student is allowed to join, regardless of GPA.  Honors Program  Provides talented students with the opportunity to take rigorous classes, that will appear on their transcript.  The North Wind  The university’s first independent, student newspaper.  Began in1972  Covers news from the university and community around it.

6 Athletics  Football o The Wildcats compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for Division 2. During the season of 2011, the Wildcats went 4-7(3-7 in league games). They had wins against Minnesota State-Mankato, Findlay, Northwood, and Tiffin.  Hockey o The Wildcat hockey team are currently already in their 2011-2012 season. They currently have 7 wins, 6 losses, and three ties. They are a part of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association at the Division 1 level. Two years ago, the Wildcats earned a bid to the Frozen Four Tournament at the end of the year(a goal for every college hockey team).  Basketball o The Wildcat basketball team competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the Division 2 level. So far into their 2011-2012 season, the Wildcats are 2-4 and looking to improve.  Other Sports o For men, there are also varsity teams for golf and nordic skiing. o For women, there are varsity teams for basketball, cross country, Nordic skiing, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball. o The university also offers many club and intramural sports that one can particapate in.

7 Student Athlete Support Services  NMU Athletes have access to the Izzo-Mariucci Room for monitoring and tutorial programs.  All-Campus Tutoring (ACT) is available to our athletes with FREE academic tutoing.  Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) improves athlete relationships with the NMU staff.  NMU Athletic Council is an advisory committee reporting directly to President Wong.

8 The Superior Dome  The largest wooden dome in the world  It is where the football team plays.  Encompasses 5.1 Acres  Stands 14 stories high  Can hold up to 16,000 attendees  Has a State of the Art weight room inside.  Holds a 200 meter indoor track.

9 Why I wish to attend  If I end up going here, I plan on pursuing a degree in Sports Science.  I would pair this with a degree in education, coaching, or nutrition.  I also plan on playing on the varsity football team, at the linebacker or long snapper position.  It is close to family whom I have not seen much in my lifetime.

10 Mission: Northern Michigan University challenges its students and employees to think independently and critically, develop lifelong learning habits, acquire career skills, embrace diversity and become productive citizens in the regional and global community. Vision: Northern Michigan University will become the university of choice in the Midwest for students seeking a quality academic program with individualized attention in a high-tech learning environment.
