Flat charactersRounded characters

Physical Appearance - OUTER PRESENCE Psychology - INNER PRESENCE Sociology – CONTEXT 1. Create a biography

Physical Appearance - OUTER PRESENCE General look. Age. Gender. Mannerisms. Looks Clothes. Grooming. Movement. Style of speech Psychology - INNER PRESENCE Intelligence. Knowledge. Personality. Temperament. Likes and dislikes. Beliefs Fears. Goals. Self-image Sociology – CONTEXT Relationship with other characters – friends, colleagues, lovers, family. Cultural background (class, education, where was he/she born or grow up). Ethnicity. Significant events of character’s life Biography

2. Define the backstory It is what happened just before the story unfolds. It is only what is relevant for the plot, not everything about the character’s life! It has to be connected with the protagonist need.

Want What does the character want in the story? It is related to the story goal. It gives a direction to the plot Why Why does the character want to achieve this? It is the conscious motivation Need What is the internal need of the character. It creates more character dimension. Sometimes the need can oppose the character’s goal 3. Find the want, why and need

To keep in mind... Characters are not real human beings, they are a work of art, a metaphor as characters are eternal while people shift True character can only be expressed through choice in dilemma – how the person chooses to act under pressure is who he is – the greater the pressure, the truer and deeper the choice to the character Character is expressed through action
