How children

Children learn… By being motivated. By being successful. By copying others. By being encouraged. More rapidly than adults. Children are more confident and willing to make mistakes than adults.

To ensure that children learn, the following stages must be carried out: 1. Understanding The child must know and understand what he/she is trying to achieve. Therefore a sports coach must be able to explain what is required. 2. Practicing Purposeful practice is essential. A sports coach must be able to create and offer opportunities for children to practice their skills and abilities.

3. Feedback Reinforces progress or alters technique. A sports coach must be able to give continuous feedback. 4. Performing The skill becomes almost automatic; the child will know and be able to concentrate on what to do, how to do it and when to do it.

Once a child is performing a skill, a cycle of Plan, Perform and Evaluate stimulates further progress. The role of a Sports coach is to offer appropriate interventions at each of the learning stages if the child is to have fun, succeed, progress and stay motivated. The learning cycle
