Trial and error? O Form your group: O Find one other person you work with very well, who has strong work habits. Write both your names on a slip of paper. Turn in. O Join up with another pair picked randomly. O You have 10 minutes. Create something with the supplies provided. O Share your finished product with the class. O BEGIN!

Establishing Norms What are they? O Norms are ways of working together that help groups be more thoughtful and productive. O Norms fall into two categories: procedural and interpersonal. O Once norms are established, it is important that the entire group take responsibility for them. O Norms can change and evolve as the group develops and matures. Establishing Norms What do they look like? O Here are some common group norms: O Share information O Ask questions O Help the group stay on task O Listen critically O Weigh and evaluate ideas, facts, opinions O Be considerate O Cooperate O Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard.

Areas to consider when setting norms O Logistics – time, place, duration, frequency O Timeliness – start, end, attendance O Courtesy – listening, interruptions, equal participation, dealing with disagreements, respect, empathy, work load O Decision Making Process – How will we make decisions? Reach agreements? How will we show agreement?

Areas to consider when setting norms continued O Workload assignment – How will work be assigned? How will conflicts with existing workloads be settled? O Setting Priorities – How will we discharge responsibility for on-time completion and equal distribution? O Enforcement of norms – How will we make sure norms are followed?

Establishing Norms Procedure O Organize your Post It notes from yesterday. O Create a chart with 2 columns: procedural norms and interpersonal norms. O Do a Round Robin: each member of the group reads one of her/his Post Its and places it in the correct column. O Begin.

Narrowing Down Norms O Group the suggestions that are similar. For example: O “Take turns speaking.” O “Make sure everyone speaks.” O Can become “Make sure everyone is heard.”

Coming to consensus O Discuss the norms that have been suggested. O Are all in agreement about the norms? O Do you have 3-5 norms all members of the group can follow?

Group Process O Write down the 3-5 norms. O Post the norms during each meeting. O Review the norms before beginning work each day. O Add new norms as the team develops and new situations arise. O Share your group’s norms with the class.

Group Jobs O Complete the Team Skills Self-Evaluation sheet. O What do you bring to the group? O What are your strengths? (leader, tech savvy, detail oriented, organized, research, presentations, time management) O What are your weaknesses? (procrastination, unorganized, lose things)

Assigning Jobs O Based on your group discussion, volunteer for a job that will help your group be successful with the persuasive presentation. O Below your list of norms, create a list with the jobs/responsibilities and the name of the person who will be in charge of each for your group.

Practice O Form a circle with your group. O You will be given a question to discuss based on your own experiences. O You will be competing against the other groups. O Every member must contribute. O Members must contribute in random order, not just in order around the circle.

Practice continued O The Winners! O The group that has followed the rules explicitly (every member contributing at least 3 times in random order) in the shortest length of time.

Who is the most influential American living today? O 6. What is your favorite class this year? O 7. What has been the best invention in the past 10 years? O 8. What are some of your dream jobs?

Debrief Practice O How did the group decide in what order students were going to speak? O Who kept order? O What means were used to encourage the more reluctant members to contribute?

Objectives: Day 3 O To use collaborative group skills and established group norms to create a product and present it. O First: Clean up your folders so you only have your group norms and jobs; the rest can be recycled.

Take 2 O Review the group norms O Review the group jobs O Group Task: Collaborate as a group to create a new product using the supplies provided and persuade the audience in a 1- 2 minute speech to purchase your product. O Use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. O Groups will vote on the most persuasive presentation.

Work Time O You have 15 minutes. O You may use notecards. O All members must be involved in the presentation. O BEGIN!
