6 The CV Purpose – To get you an interview. Make it easy to read Tailor it to the needs of the practice Don’t lie Don’t just list your jobs Choose your referees carefully and prime them (send them a copy of your CV)

7 Suggested CV 1.Name, Qualifications, Contact details 2.Brief single paragraph summary of career, specific interests and aspirations (maximum 100 words) 3.Skills profile (maximum 5)

8 Suggested CV – cont. 4.Career History confirm your skills profile highlight the areas relevant to the post reverse chronological order 5.Personal Interests 6.Referees

9 Lesson 3. The assessment should be a two-way process.

10 Pre-interview Part of your research Visit the practice Assess the locality Talk to as many of the doctors (plus the Practice Manager) as possible

11 The Interview Turn up on time! Know your CV “Why do you want this job?” –What you can add to the practice (without being critical!) –What strengths you have –What you will get out of the post Strengths & Weaknesses Answer honestly – don’t exaggerate! Have examples ready to confirm your answers

12 General Comments: LISTEN TO THE QUESTION! LISTEN FOR THE CLUES Talk clearly Don’t talk too much Don’t go off at tangents Look for the non-verbal signals (use your consultation skills!!)

13 Questions to ask What do they mean by “Full-time”? What will your earnings be? Do they have a practice agreement? Who can I phone to ask any questions I might think of later? When will you be making your decision?
