Today’s presentation will include… A brief explanation of each grade level project, including appropriate correlation to COJOWA’s Science and Technology standards. A description of the week’s proposed schedule, updated floor plans, and opening/closing ceremonies. A preliminary budget for the week, including: Project materials for all grade levels Decorations Prizes Table Rentals Agenda
4
Grade Level Projects Including correlation to standards and benchmarks
5
Project Proposal: Catch me if you can! Students will conduct an experiment to explore how the color of an organism’s skin can protect it in the environment. Kinder
6
A-maze-ing Plants! Students will design a shoebox maze in which a plant will travel through to reach light. SC1.5.1 Knows the basic needs of plants and animals (e.g., air, water, nutrients, light or food, shelter) 1 st Grade
7
Junk Music Students will create their own musical instruments with recycled household objects. SC2.9.4 Knows that sound is produced by vibrating objects 2 nd Grade
8
Egg Drop Students will design and build an “egg safe” container that will keep it safe from a free fall drop. The project will culminate in COJOWA’s Annual Egg Drop Contest. SC3.10.2 Knows that the Earth’s gravity pulls any object toward it without touching it SC3.10.5 Knows that things move in many different ways (e.g., straight line, zigzag, vibration, circular motion) 3 rd Grade
9
Roller Coaster Physics Students will design and build a roller coaster that demonstrates the concepts of kinetic/potential energy, force, and gravity. Students will calculate speed as the change in distance over time. SC4.10.4 Knows that an object’s motion can be described by tracing and measuring its position over time 4th Grade
10
Cartagena E.P.A. Students will investigate methods of cleaning an oil spill using “natural” or everyday household materials. SC5.6.5 Knows that all organisms (including humans) cause changes in their environments, and these changes can be beneficial or detrimental. 5th Grade
11
Science Fair Students will design and conduct an experiment to explore a topic of their choice under the general “theme” of the year. 6 th grade: Integrated 7 th Grade: Earth Science 8 th Grade: Life Science Standard varies, dependent on student choice. Middle School
12
The Way It Works Students will create a working model of an electronic circuit which must be functional for a daily purpose. Standard: Uses technology (e.g., hand tools, measuring instruments, calculators, computers) and mathematics (e.g., measurement, formulas, charts, graphs) to perform accurate scientific investigations and communications. 9 th Grade
13
Disasters of the Human Body Students will research the common diseases for a human body system of their choice. They will create an audiovisual presentation where each group will show and inform the classes about signs and symptoms of the illnesses, the physiology of the sick body, the pharmacologic treatment and surgical treatment if it exists. Standard: Uses technology (e.g., hand tools, measuring instruments, calculators, computers) and mathematics (e.g., measurement, formulas, charts, graphs) to perform accurate scientific investigations and communications. 10 th Grade
14
Bottle Rockets Students will design and build a totally functional small-scaled rocked mode,l propelled by the strength of pressurized air. Standard: Uses technology (e.g., hand tools, measuring instruments, calculators, computers) and mathematics (e.g., measurement, formulas, charts, graphs) to perform accurate scientific investigations and communications. 10 th Grade
15
Spaghetti Bridges Students will design and build a bridge using only spaghetti and glue. Students will test bridges for weight resistance. Standard: Uses technology (e.g., hand tools, measuring instruments, calculators, computers) and mathematics (e.g., measurement, formulas, charts, graphs) to perform accurate scientific investigations and communications. 11 th Grade
