Was this Brown actually fighting the Devil in the heart of darkness or was this his imagination? What is the relationship between reality and appearance? Dreaming? What would Brown most likely agree with by the end? Rationalism, romanticism, dark romanticism, or Puritanism and why? What themes or messages are displayed in Hawthorne’s piece? What can Faith’s pink ribbons symbolize? Give two ideas. How many other motifs can you find? Is Hawthorne saying that rejecting religion is good or bad? Support your answers. What does the fact that Brown is still married by the end mean. Is individualism good or bad?
