Lab status towards R&D 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich2 CAEN NIM Laser Source HV 40 kV SRS DAQ Slow control Gas mixing O 2 & H 2 O mon HBD GEM test cell HBD gems 3 gems electronics Micro-mega Field cage Blue logic planes TPC test cell TPC test cell ready exists missing LFT Pump Scope Optical system

Lab and equipment status at WIS (I) The lab is ready after renovation, will be moved to a “clean room status” soon. Gas mixing system (some details on slide # 6): ready and fully operational. SRS DAQ: we got all ordered parts from CERN, has been installed in the rack. RCDAQ: Martin P. has been installed it on our DAQ computer, ready to go. CAEN HV main frame & HV PS board (12 channels, 5kV & 1mA): arrived from Italy and has been installed in the rack. We also have several CAEN NIM HV PS (with nA and mA currents) which we bought during the HBD era. All of them have been tested, calibrated and installed in the rack. The HV PS for the field cage: in place (40 kV, negative), installed in the rack. The 10x10 GEMs together with PCB with one MM layer mounted on it have been purchased from Rui at CERN. Waiting in the lab for the installation. We have in the lab plenty of any kind NIM modules for the fast electronics. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich3

Lab and equipment status at WIS (II) The design of the TPC test cell vessel has been frozen (shown on slide # 7), the needed components have been ordered from “MDC vacuum” company (US). The confirmed (already delayed wrt original date) delivery date for these parts from MDC is 7/8/2014. Since the MDC parts for the TPC test cell vessel are somewhat delayed we’ll start to work on the read-out detector only using HBD GEM test vessel (shown on slide # 8). It is in the lab, it has the PCB inside with hexagonal pads. Has been tested for the vacuum, looks fine. Waiting for the HBD GEMs. Some number of the HBD GEMs together with HBD preamps will arrive soon from BNL. Will be used in the HBD GEM test vessel for the specific read-out detector measurements. The field cage design is under way, will be done soon. We have the material for it (many thanks to Nikolai S. and Bob A.). It is a kapton foil (120 micron thick) with a cooper strips. Nikolai has also sent to us a PCB for the voltage divider. The resistors for it with 1% tolerance have been ordered from “Digi-Key”. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich4

Lab and equipment status at WIS (III) The only (still) missing item is a laser: the price for a new one is too high, we are looking into possibility to buy a “second hand”. Found some candidate “Quantel ULTRA 100 GRM”. The price (from broker) is $11K, year 2007, used only for a few hours (!). Such a new one costs ~$30K. But it is optimized for the 355 nm (3 rd harmonic), perhaps we’ll need to buy the 4 th harmonic generator for 266 nm. The needed optical components (the mirrors and a focusing lens) for the laser measurements have been ordered, expect to arrive soon from US. We have in the lab two Fe 55 sources, one (5 mCi) for TPC test cell vessel, the second one (1 mCi) for HBD GEM test vessel. The laminar flow table (LFT) which we used for the HBD GEMs is in an excellent condition. Will be used for an assembly of the read-out detector. We have a handheld laser particle counter from “Kanomax” for verification/monitoring. This instrument simultaneously measures and displays 3 particle sizes of 0.3 um, 0.5 um and 5.0 um. 12/15/2015I. 7 TPC test cell vessel design 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich7 The bottom flange has 5 ports: 1. Gas input: NW25 2. Pump: NW40 3. HV feed-through: NW40 4. Viewport (quartz): NW25 5. Magnetic transporter: NW40 The vessel has 4 NW25 ports on the side: 1. Gas output - NW25 2. Two viewports (quartz) for laser beam 3. Port for manometer/temperature The read-out detector will be installed on the PCB and mounted on top flange. The optical system and Fe 55 source are mounted on the transporter. It will allow us to perform the measurements from different points of the drift cage.

TPC R&D program at WIS Test the whole system with well known gas mixture like Ar/CO 2 using the signals from Fe 55 source. Move to CF 4 based mixtures, start with Ar/CF 4 (95/5). Perform standard measurements: stability, gain, etc. Perform ion back-flow measurements with different detector configurations: triple GEM, double GEM + MM etc. Measure drift velocity as a function of a drift field. Measure electron attachment as a function of a drift field. Repeat measurements for different gas mixtures. Freeze the mechanical design of the amplification elements. At some point the beam test will be performed. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich9

WIS funding request Laser and its components - $15K ( we have an offer for $28K but we are trying to find a cheaper one). Mechanical design - $10K. Technical support - $10K. Detector components - $10K. PostDoc support - $25K. Travels - $10K. Total - $80K. * We would very much like to have a video inspection system for a quality control, ~$20K. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich10

Manpower Sasha Milov (Faculty). Ilia Ravinovich (Faculty). Sourav Tarafdar (PostDoc). Number of summer students. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich11

Summary We are moving towards the starting date for TPC R&D. The major equipment is in place. The detector components are in place. The TPC test vessel components will arrive in July. Need to order some missing items. We hope to start the real measurements soon. 12/15/2015I. Ravinovich12
