6
Implications _________________________ Major programmatic & curricular changes from the current standards Transitional period allows programs time to meet the new standards
7
Audiology Standards: Old New __________________________ 75 semester credits at BA & graduate levels specifies coursework areas & minimum # of credits Standard II 75 semester credits post BA coursework focuses on knowledge & skills in Standard IV Standard III
8
Implications _________________________ More graduate coursework required but not all in Audiology Curricula can be re-organized to emphasize topics in a different manner
9
Audiology Standards: Old New __________________________ 375 clock hours observation & direct contact areas specified Standard III 12 month FTE supervised clinical practicum focused on knowledge & skills in Standard IV Standard III
10
Implications __________________________ Major changes in curricula and practicum to meet the standards. May meet challenges with changes in health care regulations
11
Audiology Standards: Old New __________________________ Coursework areas specifically listed as well as # of credits per area basic sciences professional areas Standard II Knowledge & skills specifically listed under four key areas: foundations of practice prevention & identification evaluation treatment Standard IV
12
Implications ________________________ Major changes in record keeping for CAA reports and site visits Focus on actual abilities of students rather than exposure
13
Audiology Standards: Old New __________________________ National examination in Audiology Standard IV Outcomes assessment formative summative - national examination Standard V
14
Implications ___________________________ National examination will need to be revised. New methods of examination and record keeping will have to be devised.
15
Audiology Standards: Old New __________________________ No continuing education requirement Maintenance of certification January 1, 2003 renewed every 3 years all certificate holders Standard VI
16
Implications _________________________ Certification must be renewed. Maintenance of certification based on an exposure model.
17
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ Degree - masters or doctoral Standard I 75 semester credits, 30 at post BA level, 36 for professional area Standard II Degree - masters or doctoral 75 semester credits, 36 at post BA level Standard I
18
Implications ___________________________ 6 more credits required at post BA level in the new standards Some minor curricular changes required.
19
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ Professional coursework specified e.g. speech disorders, language disorders, hearing disorders & evaluation, AR Standard II Knowledge outcomes specified e.g., basic science, human communication, communication disorders Standard III
20
Implications ___________________________ More freedom to design courses along different lines. Need to document knowledge outcomes

22
Implications _________________________ Curricular revisions for some programs Need to document knowledge outcomes
23

24
Implications _________________________ Observation does not need to precede any direct contact. Need 25 more direct contact hours Need 75 more direct contact hours at the graduate level
25
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ Specific clinical contact areas are specified speech/language disorders, child & adult, assessment & treatment Standard III Broad clinical contact areas are specified across lifespan, diverse backgrounds, many types of disorders & differences Standard IV
26
Implications __________________________ A different style of assigning clinical practicum experiences A different style of record keeping
27
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ No skills outcomes specified Skills outcomes specified evaluation intervention interaction & personal qualities Standard IV
28
Implications _________________________ May affect supervision styles A different type of record keeping
29
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ Direct contact hours in both SLP and Aud Supervision level specified by type of activity (assessment at 50% or treatment at 25%) Standard III Direct contact hours in areas in scope of practice Supervision level specified by ability of student (never < 25%) Standard IV
30
Implications __________________________ Changes in direct contact for SLP students in Audiology, particularly for assessment and hearing aid fitting Changes in required supervision level
31
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ National examination in Speech-Language Pathology Standard IV Outcomes assessment formative summative - national examination Standard V
32
Implications ___________________________ National examination will need to be revised. New methods of examination and record keeping will have to be devised.
33
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ Clinical Fellowship 36 weeks FT experience or PT equivalent CF supervisor Standard V SLP Fellowship 36 weeks FT experience or PT equivalent SLPF mentor & employer Standard VI

35
SLP Standards: Old New __________________________ No continuing education requirement Maintenance of certification January 1, 2005 renewed every 3 years all certificate holders Standard VII

Summary __________________________ Audiology standards require greater curricular and programmatic changes than SLP standards. There is a transitional period for the Audiology standards.
38
Summary ___________________________ Both sets of new standards require the Maintenance of Certification - Audiology on 1/1/03 - SLP on 1/1/05
