5 year olds can talk about the job they want when they grow up? 6 - 8 year olds have already begun to narrow down the number of occupations they are prepared to consider in the future?

Ministerial Council for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, (MCEETYA) defines vocational learning as general learning that has a vocational perspective. It includes elements such as general employability skills, enterprise education, career education and community and work based learning.

These research findings suggest we are missing a valuable opportunity to influence and enhance the career development of our students if we do not begin career education early.

This is an initiative that the Vocational Team is promoting in schools Whole school approach to Careers – Not just the Careers Adviser! Teachers being trained as MENTORS to help guide students School to Work Plans OR Personal Learning Plans

Employability skills are those “skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions” (ACCI and BCA, 2001). Employability skills are generic skills and attributes that can be transferred from one situation to another.
