Literature 11.4 What are our lesson objectives? What will I be able to do by the end of this lesson? I will be able to: Identify theme. Identify and interpret the use of imagery. Demonstrate knowledge of authors, characters, and events in literature. Compare and contrast literary characters and selections. Identify and interpret the use of figurative language. Recognize the effect point of view has on literature. Recognize the use of language to convey mood.

Quick Write/Discussion Questions 1. In “Creation and Fall,” how does God know that Adam and Eve have eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? 2. Why does Cain say to God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” What does this line mean and what reaction does it spark in God? 3. What are psalms? 4. How do the psalms and the parables use the image of the shepherd in similar ways?

Quick Write/Discussion Questions 5. Why is the prodigal son’s return cause for celebration? 6. Why do there exist now multiple versions of the Bible, as illustrated by the two selections from today’s lesson that were taken from the King James Bible and the Revised Standard Version, respectively?

Demonstrate knowledge of authors, characters, and works of literature. Recognize author's purpose and devices use to accomplish it, including author's language, organization, and structure. Recognize effect point of view has on literature. Recognize use of language to convey mood.

Describe characters through speech, actions, or interactions with others. Compare and contrast literary characters or selections. Identify and interpret the use of imagery. Identify meter and describe its effect on poetry. Identify and interpret the use of figurative language. Identify point of view.

Keywords and Pronunciation first-person point of view : narration of a story by one of the characters, using the first-person pronouns I and me imagery : language that creates a mental picture by appealing to the senses, that makes readers see, hear, smell, taste, or feel things in their imagination; for example, "the coal-black night," "the stinging cold," "the rapping and tapping of rain on the roof" metaphor : a figure of speech that suggests or states a comparison between two unlike things, without using such words as like or as; for example, "The cat´s eyes were emeralds shining in the night." meter : the arrangement of words in poetry based on rhythm, accents, and the number of syllables in a line

Keywords and Pronunciation mood : the emotions or feelings that are conveyed in a literary work rhyme : words with similar ending sounds such as hit/bit, yellow/fellow, bark/park, and so on; when words at the end of a line of poetry or verse sound the same, the lines are said to rhyme rhythm : a regular pattern of sound and beats within a poem theme : the main message that an author wants to communicate to a reader tone : the writer's attitude toward the topic or subject

Quick Write/Discussion Questions Why must some days be dark and dreary? Does the repetition of the same phrases throughout the poem simplify the poem too much? Why or why not? Why might the poet reuse the same phrases? How does the imagery help create a mental picture? Do you relate to the speaker's feelings?

Composition 5.11 What are our lesson objectives? What will I be able to do by the end of this lesson? I will be able to: Include citations within the body of a research paper and full citations on a Works Cited page. Use complete sentences and correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Use standard English while writing and speaking. Write a research paper with a strong thesis statement. Identify purpose and audience, and determine appropriate tone for a research paper. Use an appropriate pattern of organization and appropriate transitions between paragraphs. Use technology to produce and publish writing.
