3.  Write down in your notes what you think is the meaning of the commutative property. WHAT IS THE COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY?

5.  Stand somewhere next to each other in the room. Make sure to bring your notes! FIND A PARTNER!

6.  The commutative property is the property of math that says… a + b = b + a Meaning it doesn’t matter which order we add the numbers we will get the same result.  For instance 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5. Even though we switched the starting number we still get 5.  Come up with your own example and see if it works.  Remember that commute means to travel or to move around and the commutative property is when we move around the numbers. This is one way to remember this property. WHAT IS THE COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY?

7.  Try this concept with subtraction, multiplication or division? Does it work? DOES THIS PROPERTY ONLY WORK FOR ADDITION?

8. Recruit another member to your group. You should now be in a group of 3. WHAT IS THE ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY?

9.  The associative property refers to grouping. It says…. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Meaning it doesn’t matter which group we add together first the total will be the same.  For example (2 + 3) + 5 = 2 + (3 + 5) for both problems the answer is 10.  Come up with your own example and see if it works.  Remember associate is like the group of friends you hang out with. Examples of this property tend to have parentheses. WHAT IS THE ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY?

10.  Try this concept with subtraction, multiplication or division? Does it work? DOES THIS PROPERTY ONLY WORK FOR ADDITION?

11.  On a separate sheet of paper write a short paragraph explaining the difference between the commutative property and the associative property.  Write a 10 question test (5 commutative, 5 associative) On the back side of your paper write down the answers to the problems. PICK ONE!
